3 National Economic Trends 8.7 million jobs lost during the Great Recession North Dakota and Alaska lost no jobs during the recession and have continued growing since Of the other 48 states, 12 regained prerecession job levels by September 2013 May 2014 national employment has recovered to 2008 levels

9 State Economic Trends June 2014 Idaho Department of Labor, Idaho Employment Report Through the 12 months that ended in September 2013, Idaho recovered 21,000 of the 56,000 jobs it lost to the recession While that recovery rate was 40th among the states, it underscored the slow job growth the state experienced during the first several years following the recession Idaho should reach its prerecession job levels in the first half of 2015, however the mix of jobs based on average wage has changed 2014 Idaho ranked 49 th in per capita earnings only ahead of Montana and behind Mississippi and Arkansas Source: Idaho Department of Labor Report vol. 26.6

40 Looking Back The Great Recession has had significant impacts upon the local, regional, and national economy During the same time period, the University of Idaho has experienced reduced state funding support and enrollment, which has had a significant impact upon the Moscow s local economy Schweitzer s significant employment growth and WSU s significant enrollment growth has greatly benefited the region and has helped mitigate the impact of employment losses in other sectors

41 Looking Ahead New leadership at the University of Idaho and City Opportunity for institutional assessment and realignment Enhance collaboration as a region, as recent experience has shown, when one succeeds we all benefit as an economic region Moscow-Pullman, or is that Pullman-Moscow Airport, runway realignment and recent local match efforts Increased interest from companies seeking high quality of life areas to help retain and attract employees Go Vandals and Cougs! These institutions are incredible assets to our region
