1 Update to Modern Award Pay Rates Annual Wage Review Increase Recently the Fair Work Commission handed down the Annual Wage Review decision which provided a 3.3% increase to the minimum pay rates and wage-related allowances in modern awards. The increase is applicable from the first full pay 1 July What does this mean? For schools who have employees covered by modern awards (and who are not covered by an enterprise agreement or a multi-enterprise agreement) it means that the minimum pay rates and wage-related allowances for these employees will increase from the first full pay 1 July 2017 by 3.3%. Weekly rates are rounded to the nearest 10 cents. What if the School pays above the modern award rates? Modern awards provide only minimum entitlements for employees. Subject to individual contracts, the 3.3% increase may be off-set or absorbed by the above award rate that the school is currently paying. Employees who are covered by a modern award must be paid at least those rates and wage-related allowances in the modern award to avoid an underpayment claim. If a school has a contractual obligation to an employee to pay him or her a set amount above the modern award rate then the pay rate for that employee would need to be increased. What does this mean for the minimum pay rates for Sports Coaches? The pay rates in the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award 2010 have increased by 3.3% and the weekly rates are to be rounded to the nearest 10 cents. Sports coaches are under the Instructional Services grades 1 5 which places them at commencement of employment on Levels 2.1, 3.1, 4.2, 5.1 and 6.1 respectively. The minimum rates for sports coaches from the first full pay 1 July 2017 are as follows: Level 2.1 $ per week / $40,460 per annum Level 2.2 $ per week / $41,723 per annum Level 3.1 $ per week / $42,245 per annum Level 3.2 $ per week / $43,002 per annum Level 4.2 $ per week / $46,826 per annum Level 5.1 $ per week / $48,345 per annum Level 5.2 $ per week / $50,662 per annum Level 6.1 $1, per week / $52,477 per annum Level 6.2 $1, per week / $56,052 per annum Page 1 of 10
