6 Introduction The U.S. labor force is aging due in large part to the aging of the baby boomers (those individuals born between 1946 and 1964). At the time of this report, these 76 million individuals were between the ages of 41 and 59. By 2012, more than two in five workers (42%) in the U.S. are projected to be age 45 and older, up from only 37% in (Toossi, 2004) During this ten-year period, the number of workers ages 45 and older will grow by nearly 27%, whereas the number of workers ages 16 to 44 is expected to grow by only 3%. The State Profiles of Workers 45+ is designed to provide information about the 45+ workforce in each state so that AARP state offices and others within AARP will have a better understanding of this population in order to plan and implement programs related to mature workers. 1 This document provides information about 45+ workers within each state such as # of hours worked per week, in which industries they work, and how many work in the private or public sector. In order to shed light on any demographic differences between workers and non-workers, demographic information is also provided for workers as well as non-workers. Data were gathered from the American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Micro Sample (PUMS), which is taken from the U.S. Census Bureau data. 2 For purposes of this report, workers are defined as individuals who reported that they were working for either pay or profit and non-workers are defined as individuals who stated that they were not working for pay or profit, laid off, temporarily absent from a job or business, or not in the labor force. Percentages in the tables are rounded to the nearest one-tenth of a percent. Therefore, numbers less than.05% are reported as 0.0, while numbers that equal 0 are reported as No state specific data were available for the U.S. Virgin Islands from the U.S. Census Bureau s American Community Survey, Public Micro Use Sample. 2 Data for Puerto Rico were provided from the U.S. Census Bureau s 2000 American Community Survey, Public Micro Use Sample. 5

7 Each state profile includes the following sections (see Guide to Interpreting Tables in Appendix A): Employment Status of 45+ by Gender This table provides a comparative look between a state and the U.S. as a whole. It includes the number of people who are employed, unemployed, and not in the labor force. The table includes a row percentage of males and females for each category, followed by the total number in that category. While looking at the state specific information, the data below show how each state compares to the entire U.S. population in regards to the number of people who are employed, unemployed, or not in the labor force. 3 Please note that the number of individuals classified as unemployed represents those individuals who report that they are not working, but have looked for work recently. If individuals who are looking for work become discouraged and stop looking or retire, they are likely to be reported as not in the labor force. Work Profile of 45+ Workforce This table focuses on those 45+ who are in the workforce in each state. It provides information on the number of hours worked per week, the class of worker (whether someone is working for a for-profit, not-for-profit, government, is self-employed, or working without pay in a family business or farm), and the type of industry. The data in the tables are presented in columns, reporting on the number of males, females, and both males and females who are working. Selected Demographic Characteristics of 45+ Workers and Non-Workers This table offers a comparison of demographic characteristics of workers and non-workers age 45+ in each state. Demographic characteristics include: education, income, race, grandparent status, and disability status. The data in the tables are presented in columns, reporting on the number of workers and non-workers, followed by the total population who fall into these demographic categories. Organizational Resources Each state profile includes a list of organizations within each state that provide job information and/or employment assistance for older workers. Depending on the availability of information, the organizational name, address, phone/fax number, address, and/or website address is provided, along with a brief summary. States may also use the Local Employment Dynamics (LED), which is a partnership between the U.S. Census Bureau and state labor market information agencies. As of February 2005, a select number of states (CA, ID, IL, IA, MD, MO, NM, OR, VA, and WV) have developed a set of Profiles of Older Workers, which may be downloaded at Since the state profiles are created at the discretion of a state s Labor Market Information Office, there is no indication on when or if additional profiles will become available. Among the items included in the profile are: a description of a state s workforce by age, industries with a high proportion of older workers, job stability for older workers by industry, and average earnings. 3 Due to discrepancies in the 2000 ACS PUMS data for Puerto Rico, the total number of employed individuals reported under Employment Status of 45+ by Gender differ from the total number of 45+ workers reported under Work Profile of the 45+ Workforce. This is attributed to the fact that the total number employed under the Employment Status table includes all individuals who worked, including those who reported working zero hours, whereas the Work Profile table only includes individuals who reported working at least one or more hours per week. 6
