1 EBRI Databook on Employee Benefits Chapter 6: Employment-Based Retirement Plan Participation UPDATED July 2014 This chapter looks at the percentage of American workers who work for an employer who sponsors an employment-based retirement plan and the percentage that actual participate in the plan. Furthermore, a breakdown of those that do not participate is also provided. The data for the basis of this chapter is the March supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS). CPS has the most detailed demographic data on workers and their employers provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. Other sources of data provide the level of retirement plan participation, but do not have the detail on the employee demographics such as data from the National Compensation Survey conducted bydol s Bureau of Labor Statistics. See for more detail about this survey. For further discussion on CPS and other data sets providing estimates of retirement plan participation by workers, see Craig Copeland, Employment-Based Retirement Plan Participation: Geographic Differences and Trends, 2012, EBRI Issue Brief #392 (November, 2013).
