This position has a high volume of work and requires someone with multi - tasking ability. The person selected for the position will receive and route routine and emergency calls by radio or telephone and will transmit messages by the operation of radio, telephone, fax, teletype, and other communication equipment essential to the operation of the Police Department. Incumbent will also perform clerical work and other work as directed. Will utilize computer equipment including the Department's Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System. Receives and dispatches radio and telephone messages; maintains and completes logs and other written records of messages; enters statistical data and keeps records of departmental data and operations; operates teletype, radio, computers and other similar equipment; routes mail, correspondence and other forms of messages; receives, dispatches, and records information; may, if female, on occasion, perform matron duties. Has considerable public contact, receives complaints and reports from the public. Incumbent is required to work shifts, holidays, weekends, emergency overtime, and be on-call as required in accordance with work schedules established by the Department.
2 REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent; eighteen (18) years of age; type a minimum of 40 wpm; possess a valid California driver's license; able to pass a thorough background investigation, including a psychological exam & polygraph, conducted by the Police Department; able to pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen. Must pass the written P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with T-score of 50+. Knowledge & Abilities: Knowledge of office and clerical procedures and operations such as filing, sorting, entering statistics and records; ability to be mentally alert at all times while on duty and to remain calm under stress; ability to make rapid decisions, often times while performing two or more operations; ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff and the general public; ability to speak clearly and concisely; possess good memory capability; ability to follow oral and written directions and commands. SKILLS CERTIFICATION: SELECTION PROCESS: Desirable: Prior dispatching experience. CERTIFICATION OF TYPING SKILLS AT 40 WPM MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION. Certification may be from a recognized business school, employment or temporary agency and must be dated within the past 6 months. A limited number of the most qualified applicants will be invited to an oral appraisal on a date to be announced. The score the candidates receive on the oral appraisal is weighted at 100% and will determine their placement on the eligibility list. CURRENT BENEFITS & WORKING CONDITIONS: The City of Martinez offers excellent working conditions and surroundings. Enjoy the recently remodeled ergonomically correct dispatch center. Shifts: Employees may be assigned to work 3 days with 12 hour shifts (3/12), 4 days with 10 hour shifts (4/10) or 5 days with 8 hour shifts (5/8). MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS, EMERGENCY OVERTIME, AND BE AVAILABLE ON-CALL AS REQUIRED. Shift Differential: Education: Retirement:: Deferred Comp: Vacation: In addition to regular salary, an employee assigned to a swing, cover, or graveyard shift will receive up to 3% additional pay for shift differential. Every employee who has an Associate of Arts Degree from an accredited school or college upon employment, or who achieves an Associate of Arts Degree during employment, shall receive three percent (3%) additional pay added to their base salary. Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Currently, the City contributes 100% of the employee's portion toward retirement. Retirement of 2% at age 55. Currently, the City contributes $65.00 per month into a deferred compensation (ICMA) plan. Accrued at 8 hours per month for the first four years of service.
3 Holidays: Sick Leave: Uniform Allowance: Longevity Pay: Bilingual Pay: Meal Allowance: Insurance: Fourteen days per year. Accrued indefinitely at the rate of 8 hours per month. $625 annual uniform allowance, which is paid semi-monthly. 5% at 15 years of service and an additional 2% at 20 years of service. 2% for one language and 4% for two or more languages. Sign language is included. A meal allowance of $8.00 shall be paid for every four (4) hours of unscheduled overtime. Medical: The City offers Kaiser, Blue Shield HMO and Blue Cross PPO for health coverage. For employees hired on or after January 1, 2007, the City will pay the amount of the Kaiser premium in effect on January 1, 2007, plus 85% of each increase in the premium. Employees selecting coverage other than Kaiser must pay the difference between the Kaiser premium and that of the other health plans. Dental: The City pays 100% of the premium for Delta Dental, which includes a $4,000 orthodontic lifetime benefit. Life Insurance: The City pays 100% of the premium for life insurance of 2x the annual salary. Long Term Disability: The City pays 100% of the premium for long term disability. Probation: Employee must successfully pass a 12 month probationary period.
