2 General Almost people were killed in road accidents on motorways in the European Union countries between 2005 and This number corresponds to 7% of all road fatalities in those countries. There were road accident fatalities on motorways in 2005, and the number fell by 48% in 2014 (1.865). The total number of road accident fatalities in the European Union countries also fell significantly over the same decade, by 42%. The number of people killed in road accidents on motorways fell by 48% in the decade from 2005 to Although the overall number of road fatalities decreased rather steadily, the trend for motorway fatalities has been more variable. 8 In the following tables and figures, the CARE data for 2014 are analysed in greater detail. It should be noted that the latest available data are used, meaning 2009 data for BG, 2010 data for MT, and 2013 data for IE, SI and SK. The highest percentage of fatalities on motorways in the EU in 2014 occurred in the age group. Age Group Table 5a shows the distribution of fatalities on motorways in 2014 by age group in the EU countries and Switzerland, while Table 5b shows the respective distribution on non-motorway road network. Of the age groups studied, the highest percentage of fatalities on motorways occurred in the age group. It is noted that the over 64 age group is less involved in motorway fatalities (15%) than in non-motorway fatalities (27%). 10 Figure 5a shows the distribution of fatalities on motorways by age group and road user type in the EU in Only a low percentage of fatalities were pedestrians (6% - 16%, depending on age group). The percentage of driver fatalities on motorways is highest for the age group (67%), followed by the age group (61%). The majority of killed aged below 18 years were passengers (94%). On these roads, the percentage of drivers fatalities is highest in the age group (73%). Young road users (up to 18 years old) were mostly killed as passengers on nonmotorway roads (45%). Figure 5b also shows that on non-motorway roads, 25% of killed people aged below 18 years and 41% of elderly fatalities (more than 64 years old) were pedestrians. 14 58% of fatalities on motorways across the EU countries were car or taxi occupants. About 13% of fatalities on motorways across the EU countries were pedestrians. Table 7 shows the number of fatalities on motorways in 2014 by mode of transport. About 58% of fatalities on motorways across the EU countries were car or taxi occupants and almost 10% of fatalities were users of two-wheelers. Furthermore, Slovenia (31%), Slovakia (26%) and Finland (25%) had high percentages of pedestrian fatalities on motorways

By comparison, Figure 6b shows that 27% of fatalities on non-motorway roads were users of two wheeled vehicles with the Netherlands having the highest percentage (46%). 16 Manoeuvre Type Table 8a shows that the vehicle manoeuvre most frequently associated with fatalities on motorways in the EU countries is driving straight ahead. About 24% of fatalities were occupants of vehicles, who were driving straight ahead and making no other manoeuvre. However, the corresponding percentage for this manoeuvre on non-motorway network is lower (18%), as shown in Table 8b, maybe due to the large number of not defined manoeuvres. More specifically, in 8 countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Croatia, Italy, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden) almost all manoeuvres on motorways and on non-motorways are not defined. 18 Lighting Conditions Figure 7 shows that, in 2014, 47% of the fatalities on motorways in the EU countries occurred in accidents during daylight or twilight. The respective percentage for the remaining road network in the EU appears to be only slightly higher (54%). Note that the high percentage of fatalities for which the lighting condition is not defined means that the actual percentages are rather higher.
