PDO/PRE-RETIREMENT FORUM HEALTH TIPS HYPERTENSION (Continuation from the last edition) AIICO PENSION MANAGERS LIMITED'S RSA FUND PERFORMANCE AS AT 30th JUNE 2017 CROSSWORD PUZZLE/JUST FOR GIGGLE EDITOR S DESK Dear Esteemed Customer, In developed economies with properly coordinated pension arrangements just like the one being currently practiced in Nigeria, pension funds have been utilized to successfully finance infrastructural projects that have bettered the lot of its citizens. In this regard, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) is working tirelessly to ensure Nigeria is not left out of benefitting from the pool of long terms assets for the development of the much needed infrastructure, that will not only alleviate the conditions of living of its citizens, but will also help grow GDP by attracting foreign investors. To this end, PenCom's regular review of its investment policies and guidelines not only seeks to safeguard contributors' retirement funds, but also to find ways of ensuring that the assets can be channeled into bankable projects that will help develop the much needed infrastructure, whilst returning a decent income for the benefit of the contributors. The proposed increase in variable income investments provides the opportunity for better financing options for infrastructure development. In this edition, we will review the newly introduced RSA Multi-Fund Structure and its modalities. We will also showcase the activities that ushered our recently marked 11th anniversary. Our other usual columns such as our nationwide enlightenment visitation activities, fund performance report, health care section and fun spot, have all been included for your reading pleasure. The weeklong celebration which was coined customer appreciation week saw customers who visited APML offices nationwide received gifts and goodie bags, took pictures with members of Management and staff, joined others in the cutting of the anniversary cake and had plenty to eat and drink. Our esteemed customers also had the opportunity to meet our brand ambassador Ms. Joke Silva, who was a guest at our head office, for a meet and greet session. Lucky winners of our online anniversary trivia challenge were given VIP tickets to attend a stage play production, produced by our very own brand ambassador titled HEARTBEAT: A NEW BEGINNING. Winners enjoyed the red carpet photo session and enjoyed the after show treats. APML truly knows how to appreciate its own people and we did just that!!

3 AMENDED REGULATION ON INVESTMENT OF PENSION FUND ASSETS In line with its commitment at ensuring contributors under the Contributory Pension Scheme get the best value under the scheme, The National Pension Commission has amended the regulation on investment of pension fund assets operated by the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). The amended regulation seeks to ensure a dynamic and effective regulatory regime for the investment of pension fund assets in Nigeria. The rationale for this amendment was to expand the asset classes in which pension fund assets under management PFAs can be invested, as well as the thresholds/limits of such investments. The major inclusion in the amended regulation is the introduction of the RSA Multi-Fund Structure. THE RSA MULTI-FUND STRUCTURE FOR THE RSA FUND The amended regulation introduces the Retirement Savings Account (RSA) Multi-Fund Structure in section 7 of the policy, which seeks to invest RSA holders' contributions to align with their age profile and risk appetite. The Multi fund structure classifies the RSA fund into four (4) separate funds as follows: a. Young Contributors (Fund I) b. Middle Aged Contributors (Fund II) c. Contributors close to Retirement (Fund III) d. Retired Contributors (Fund IV) YOUNG CONTRIBUTORS (FUND I) This is a more aggressive fund type with a greater slant towards variable income instruments, which can make up as much as 75% of the fund. The expectation from this increased weighting is a greater propensity for it to have the highest returns among all the funds. However, it must be noted that it also has the highest risk profile and is ONLY for contributors who have expressly signified intention to be included in the fund. MIDDLE AGED CONTRIBUTORS (FUND II) This fund is for active contributors who are 49 years and below as at their last birthdays. It is the default fund for every RSA holder and is the current structure in place, where the fund is exposed to moderate risk and permitted to accommodate a maximum of 55% variable income investments while maintaining a minimum of 10%. CONTRIBUTORS CLOSE TO RETIREMENT (FUND III) This fund type is default for Active Contributors who are 50 years and above as at their last birthdays and it accommodates a maximum of 20% variable income investment. RETIRED CONTRIBUTORS (FUND IV) This fund currently exists as the Retiree Fund and will remain so under the new fund structure to be inaugurated. Members of this fund are only allowed a maximum 10% exposure to variable income investments which is optional depending on the investment strategy of the PFA. Active Choices: Subsequent to the implementation of the Multi-fund Structure, contributors will be allowed to choose the type of Fund in which they desire to be. However, the following rules will apply: I. An active Contributor in Fund II who wishes to be assigned to Fund I shall make a formal request to the PFA. ii. An active Contributor in Fund III who wishes to be assigned to Fund II shall make a formal request to the PFA. iii. An RSA Retiree or active Contributor who is 50 years and above shall not be allowed to choose Fund I. Pension Fund Administrators have a tentative six (6) months transition period, effective from the commencement date of the Multi-Fund to restructure their respective portfolios. 3
4 PDO/PRE-RETIREMENT FORUM During the second quarter, our enlightenment team had a Pension Desk Officers (PDO) forum and Pre-Retirement seminar in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on the 18th of May The venue was the Leisure Spring Hotel Limited, Osogbo and in attendance was Mr. S. A Raji, Director Osun State Bureau of Public Pensions and other officials of the bureau. Also present at the forum were PDOs from public sector MDAs and private sector organizations, Retirement Savings Accounts (RSA) holders and Retirees in Osogbo and its environs. A paper on the current trends in the pension industry and materials to assist the PDOs and RSA holders on their RSA concerns in order to have a better working relationship with AIICO Pension Managers Limited and understanding of their RSAs respectively, was presented to attendees. The pre-retirement seminar on the other hand had RSA holders close to the mandatory retirement age and some Retirees in attendance. Speakers at the seminar dealt extensively on topics that prepared the minds of attendees for life in retirement, available benefit payment options at retirement, financial discipline and a step by step guide to understanding the processes involved in applying for benefits when they retire. A medical practitioner wrapped up the session by delivering a paper which enlightened the attendees on topics on personal health and stress management. Free basic medical checks were carried out by the medical team. The next event is scheduled to take place during the month of August in Kano State. 5 HEALTH TIPS HYPERTENSION Continuation from the last edition HOW TO PREVENT HYPERTENSION Below are necessary steps to the prevention of hypertension: Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Diet can have a major impact on your blood pressure and following a healthy diet is a great starting point. Eat a balanced diet with small regular meals instead of three huge ones. Stop SMOKING Exercise An active lifestyle builds the foundation for a healthy life. Don't make excuses to avoid exercise. Even if you can't set aside time for exercise every day, try and walk as much as possible. Regular blood pressure check-up Get your blood pressure checked regularly either by a medical practitioner or at home with the home kit. WHY HYPERTENSION IS CALLED THE SILENT KILLER? Include variety in your food When you shop, make a list of foods from all food groups. Examples are whole wheat products, brown rice, lentils, vegetables and salads. Eat a lot of vegetables and salads on a daily basis. Include as much color through vegetables and fruit in your diet. Foods like dried beans, chick peas, lentils and soy are low-fat and rich in protein and fiber. Cut down on Fats Minimize butter and oil and go for foods with essential fats. These include avocados, unsalted nuts and seeds. Maintain a healthy weight When it comes to hypertension prevention, your weight is crucial. People who are overweight should try to lose weight and people of normal weight should avoid adding any. If you are carrying extra weight, losing as little as 10 pounds can help prevent high blood pressure. Talk with your doctor about the best weight loss plan for you. The truth is, high blood pressure is a condition that can exist within oneself and without you being aware of it. It is a serious condition that can cause disabilities such as stroke and heart disease or worse death. Untreated hypertension can result to blindness, kidney disease and heart failure, besides putting you at risk of another silent villain, diabetes. Don't Ignore HYPERTENSION. Go for regular checkups and incorporate a healthy lifestyle. Stay Healthy! OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS Minimize Salt Salt is a major cause for high blood pressure. Avoid cooking with salt as much as possible. Instead, use herbs, garlic, lemon juice, pepper, chili, curry powder or ginger as food flavor. Cutting out salt to control hypertension also means avoiding packed foods that are high in salt. Examples are ready to eat products, packaged soups, crisps and snacks, tinned food and bakery goods Drink lots of water Everyday You can also dilute fruit juice for variety or simply go with drinking herbal tea. Restrict your coffee and tea intake to two per day. Remember: Caffeine and alcohol will raise your blood pressure. 5
