2 WHY: Health Care Coverage Costs National Health Expenditure $1.6 Trillion (2002) 9.3% increase from % increase from % faster than overall economy 5.7% faster than overall economy $5,400 per person (2002) 15% of Gross Domestic Product Since 2000 health coverage premiums for family coverage have increased 60% (11.2% between 2003 and 2004) In 2003 employees paid 16 and 27% (single and family) of the premium; Employers paid the remainder; Employees, on average, contribute a smaller share in 2003 than 1993 Source: CMS, Office of the Actuary, National Health Statistics Group.
3 WHY: Health Care Costs and Chronic Diseases Higher premiums when employees are part of a medium or high risk group, meaning the ones who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and others Lower premiums as employees move from high risk to medium to low risk groups Chronic diseases requires a change in behavior Bad management consequences leads to complications National Institute of Health proved that diet and exercise reduce complications in patients that suffer from diabetes, hypertension and obesity
4 HOW are diseases currently managed today? Log information on notepads Use a calculator and a food facts book Use multiple software programs to compile all information No way to see it all in one report
5 Challenges to High Risk Employees In order to effectively manage a chronic disease, employees have to continuously and simultaneously do the following: Track precise food consumption, physical activities, and medication Learn nutritional facts of every food they consume Adjust and calculate medication dosage depending on their food intake per meal (as advised by their doctor) Factor in additional variables including caloric expenditure of exercise, sleep, stress, mood, variations on your health due to colds and related illness

8 YOUR role managing the program and helping to implement it Make sure to initially understand the issues the corporation is facing regarding health care costs Use the service to make assessments to design the right programs to offer Create the program to attend the high risk population as well as the populations that are border line and currently healthy Use the service to be available when needed. For example a recommendation per high risk employee, per month; Wellness seminars to educate employees; and so on. Set educational sessions and check points to verify the reach and effectiveness of your program
9 Proving Return of Investment Before you start the program, set achievable goals that will impact the corporation bottom line Always have an initial assessment to serve as you initial start measure Create periodic check points when you run assessments to check against the initial one and measure progress Establish the reports the corporation will want to see to measure their ROI
