Source: FactSet, Macquarie Research, August 2015 (all figures in NZD unless noted) 3 August 2015 Macquarie Securities (NZ) Limited Should benefit from a weak Kiwi Event We are upgrading our price target and earnings on the back of a weak currency and a modest reduction in our beta estimate. We expect NPX to report a FY15 result that is at the upper end of their guidance range or even possibly above (excluding non-trading items). Impact Raw materials prices have not recovered. The cost of raw materials makes up circa 70% of revenues for Nuplex. Nuplex recovers increases in the cost of raw materials after a 1-3 month delay; this delay can have a significant impact on Nuplex s results given the magnitude of the raw material expense and the volatility in their prices. The prices of raw materials we follow have not changed significantly since the upgrade to guidance in May and so this is unlikely to have been caused a variance to management s expectations. NZ dollar weakness leads to upgrades in FY16 and beyond. Nuplex has significant operations outside of NZ that generate profits in foreign currencies: half of the Resin division s EBITDA was generated in Europe in 2014 and the vast bulk of the remaining EBITDA was denominated in US dollars. Consequently, Nuplex should benefit from the recent weakness in the NZ dollar. China a risk factor. In late FY2015 Nuplex received the final approvals to commence production at its new Changshu plant, which significantly increases their China based capacity. The growth rate of the demand for resins grows is a function of overall economic growth, and so the speed at which they can ramp this facility could be impacted by a slowdown in Chinese growth rates. Changes we ve made to our forecasts. We have made three noteworthy changes to our NPX forecasts: beta, currency and Asia volumes and margins. The most significant change was the change to our currency assumptions: incorporating the recent plunge in the NZ dollar adds almost 70 cps to our DCF. Earnings and target price revision The NZ dollar and Asian assumptions changes have both impacted our forecasts beyond FY2015. EPS revisions: FY15=0%, FY16=0.8% and FY17=5.6%. We have also increased our target price from $4.00 to $4.75. Price catalyst 12-month price target: NZ$4.75 based on a DCF methodology. Catalyst: FY15 result announcement on August 14th. Action and recommendation We maintain our Outperform with a $4.75 price target. While the balance of risks has deteriorated with the sharp rerating, we are still of the view that NPX is likely to have been conservative with its guidance and expect the market to be positively surprised by the upcoming result and/or outlook statement. Please refer to page 6 for important disclosures and analyst certification, or on our website
2 Raw material pricing Nuplex is highly leveraged to raw material pricing: the raw material expense line is circa 7 times that of EBITDA. While the company typically passes on changes in the pricing of raw materials there tends to be a 1 3 month lag. This lag can have a significant impact on NPX s results, and so one risk to the 2015 guidance was that raw materials escalated. Figure 1 provides an indication of raw material pricing using a selection of raw materials. 3 New Zealand dollar The recent deprecation in the NZ dollar has had a significant impact on our earnings forecasts and valuation for Nuplex. We use a constant currency approach for Nuplex, improving the transparency of our earnings forecasts. We tend to update our currency assumptions at the time of the result, but given the recent sell off in the NZ dollar have elected to bring forward this change. Figure 3 provides the EBITDA currency exposures of Nuplex. It is important to note that the Asian operations are US Dollar denominated.
