2 These ieces were created so all articiating students can work on the same iece while rearing to audition or a sot in District azz Band Within the ull score, each art was created to also serve as a stand alone test o skill necessary or accetance into that ensemble Be very seciic with articulations and dynamic markings The advantage o correlating the audition arts into one ensemble iece is that teachers can now rehearse and reare multile students at the same time instead o rearing nine searate ieces The worry, however, is that by racticing as a ull band, the individual arts may get lost in the mix ltimately, the individual arts will be auditioned not in relation to any other art within the ensemble but as a stand alone iece Teachers should make sure to reare each individual articiant beyond ull ensemble sessions is a Latin iece in sections: oening anare, main melody which reeats or solos, closing transition, and cadenza The D Phrygian scale, which is based on the 3rd note o the Bb major scale, is used throughout Other characteristics o the Latin style are the use o cut time, trills and syncoated rhythms Hereʼs the way the audition would work: Students will lay the written scale to start their audition Winds Play measures 1 through as written, or erhas add some embellishment to the anare melody Play meas 5 through the 1st ending as written On the reeat, students may choose to irovise, reeat the melody as written, or erhas add embellishments to the existing melody as they see it They would then move on to the second ending and into meas 36 to 3, which should be layed as written rom to 9 is a cadenza lay as written, irovise over the changes, or alter the melody as much or as little as desired to get to the ermata Rhythm section Play the written arts throughout When reeating meas 1 through the 1st ending, iano, guitar, and bass have the choice to irovise, or co on the changes ll auditions will be erormed with an accoaniment D when in the audition room Rehearsal suggestions: This iece may also be used as art o an irov lesson or any azz Band The included counterline allows or one student to irovise while other winds lay the accoaniment material You can reeat through the 1st ending as oten as needed to allow everyone a chance to solo The melody has also been included on the guitar and iano arts to give those layers insight into the actual tune they are accoanying Solo tis: This uses a tyical Latin chord rogression: Dmi Dmi Dmi Dmi 7 (b9, b13) The scales at the beginning alternate between the irst 2 chords The 7 scale is missing, but soloists should ocus on using a # instead o a natural when they get to this chord Teachers may want to sketch out the chord tones or this one chord or students working on irovisation
