1 Pop Art Federalism Social Studies & Art Social Studies Standard - Grade 8 1.A.1.b. Explain and summarize the principles of federalism, popular sovereignty, rule of law, consent of the governed, separation of powers, checks and balances, majority rule, limited government and how they protect their individual rights and impact the functioning of government. Grade 8 Maryland State Art Standard 2.3.a Compare similarities and differences in subject matter, styles, and techniques among various cultures and periods of art history 3.2.a Creative expression and production: Students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art. Demonstrate ways the elements of art in principles of design are manipulated to communicate ideas. Communicate ideas and concepts by manipulating elements of art and principles of design to achieve specific visual effects. CONNECTED OBJECTIVES Students will interpret pop art and its relation to symmetry and repetition by creating a recipe that describes Federalism and outlines the three powers of government a s s o c i a t e d w i t h i t. M A T E R I A L S & R E S O U R C E S Federalism Recipe handout Internet resources of Cakes by Thiebaud Reading on Federal System of Government One Oreo cookie per student K E Y C O N T E N T V O C A B U L A R Y Federalism Concurrent Powers Shared Powers Reserved Powers K E Y A R T S V O C A B U L A R Y Balance Value

2 A S S E S S M E N T Students create a recipe of federalism by labeling the different parts of the cake with the different powers of the federal and state governments Students will also explain the three powers between the federal and state governments by taking apart an Oreo cookie and explaining it to their partner. (The cookie represents the cakes from the lesson) L E S S O N S T E P S 1. Warm up: The word of the day: balance 2. Begin the PowerPoint on Balance in art. Students will use Artful Thinking an I see, I think, I wonder with Wayne Thiebaud s Cakes painting. We will do this aloud as a class. In conjunction with the I see, I think, I wonder we will discuss the elements of art and the principles of design, specifically texture and balance. 3. We will then discuss briefly the element of repetition and how artists use it in the pop-art movement. This will help solidify the concept of balance. 4. Present and analyze a political cartoon of the Federal system. (*This cartoon is one of the first ever political cartoons in America, published in 1788.) 5. Transition into the reading on The Federal System of Government. Teacher guided reading with students following along by highlighting and underlining key words and phrases. Students may volunteer to read, but reading aloud will not be required. 6. After the reading, the students will be given a worksheet where they will be required to make a recipe for federalism. They will use the Federal System of Government reading to help them fill in three powers that belong to the federal government and state government. Then they will find three powers that are shared between them, or the concurrent powers. 7. After they finish their recipe, each student will get an Oreo cookie that represents Federalism. The students will then be prompted to take their cookie apart layer by layer and explain to their partner what each layer represents in the federal government. While the students are doing this I will be walking around the room monitoring for student participation and that each student has mastered the concept. 8. For closure, the students will answer the end of the lesson question: Ask students to use the Artful Thinking routine: Creative Comparisons to talk about how the Cakes painting connects to the idea of federalism. How is federalism like a layered cake/cookie?
