PROGRAMME NOTE The title o Near Paradise is a quotation rom Robert Frost's oem 'A Winter Eden', which deicts a scene in nature - and a vision o aradise - which is at once ecstatic and hesitant. The emotional state o the oem alls short o comlete airmation, with the landscae being described as 'one level higher than the earth below, one level nearer heaven overhead'. I was attracted by the ambiguity o the oem, and the very human quality o the temered joy which it describes. Near Paradise is characterised by resonant and oten extremely static harmonies, and by an almost diatonic melody which aears in various orms throughout the iece, most notably on the clarinet, the cor anglais and the French horns.
