1 Main Topic 10: Health Care Lesson 59: Medical Insurance (20-25 minutes) Today, you will: 1. Learn useful vocabulary related to INSURANCE. 2. Review the form of verbs in Present Perfect Tense. I. VOCABULARY Exercise 1: What s the meaning? (5-6 minutes) Choose the meaning of the underlined words from the choices that follow. Then practice using the words in your own sentences. 1. Construction workers may file a claim if they meet an accident while at work. a. request b. complaint c. certificate d. lawsuit 2. This month s medical purchase exceeded the budget. a. expense b. allowance c. acquisition d. effectiveness 3. 3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. An employee reports back to work after a week of being confined in the hospital. Employee: My medical exam results show that I have a high level of cholesterol. HR Officer: I m sorry to hear that. What was Dr. Yuri s (1)? Employee: She does not require me to take any medications for now, but I definitely have to be more careful with my food intake. She also said that a daily dosage of Vitamins C and E could help. HR Officer: You really have to take care of your health. That is a serious concern. A heart attack could lead to a severe (2) and even death. Just think about the people you will leave behind. Employee: I know. In fact, I called my insurance company to confirm that my six-year old daughter is my sole (3). I want her future to be secured just in case something bad happens to me. HR Officer: You signed the policy five years ago, right? Have you finished paying for it? Employee: I am already on my last (4) of payment. It has been helpful in paying for the different tests and the medical services. Having a medical insurance truly relieved me from additional worries. HR Officer: Wow! For such a small (5), it has been indeed a great investment. Choices: a. beneficiary b. disability c. relative d. premium e. prescription f. term 3
4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Verb Form- Present Perfect (5-6 minutes) A verb in the present perfect tense is formed by using the helping verb have (has/have) and the past participle form of the main verb. This verb generally indicates either one of the two things: a. an experience that occurred at an unspecified time in the past b. an action or a situation that started in the past and continues to take place in the present. Remember: In stating experiences, words like ever/never are often used. In citing actions that started in the past and continues in the present, words like for and since may be utilized. In referring to situations that occurred unexpectedly, the word already is used; whereas, in expressing the completion or non-completion of an expected occurrence, the word yet is used. Examples: SUBJECT PREDICATE Has/Have Past Participle Sakura has observed silence in the past hour. I have never been to Europe. Mr. Kimura has not called since 1 p.m. The doctor and the nurse have already read my medical records. Comprehension Check: Have you ever experienced nausea after an accident? 4
5 Exercise 1: Incomplete Sentences (5-6 minutes) Choose the word or phrase that would best complete the following sentences. 1.
