Dental NADP Update on Affordable Care Act (ACA) Market Impacts Evelyn Ireland, Executive Director, National Association of Dental Plans (NADP) Evelyn Ireland is a nationally recognized expert on the dental benefits industry and ACA. She will be sharing updates on how the dental benefits marketplace is being reshaped by ACA. Her presentation will provide insights on the HIT 2017 moratorium, Cadillac tax delay, trends in employer and Exchange coverage, new network adequacy requirements for 2017 as well as state dental loss ratios debates. Disability Being an Employee/Leader in an Agile Workforce Steve Gorsun, Unum; Mark Higgins, Lincoln An interactive session that explores the ever changing underwriting workforce and workplace (shifting demographics, varying generational preferences, quickly advancing technology and tools) and both the challenges and opportunities they present for managers and underwriters alike. 11:30 12:45 pm Lunch 12:45 1:45 pm Workshop II Specialty and Health Marijuana: Legalization trends and what we know (and don t know) about health effects Timothy McAfee, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) This presentation will review the current state and federal landscape and potential issues associated with legalization of medical use and retail sales. It will also provide an overview of what we know (and wish we knew) about marijuana s risk profile and potential therapeutic uses. Forty states have legalized marijuana for medical conditions and 4 states have legalized retail sales. Reported health and safety risks associated with the use of marijuana include respiratory and cardiac illnesses, dependence, mental health related problems and other issues impacting public health such as impaired driving. Dental The State of the Dental Benefits Market Jerry Berggren, Director of Research and Information, NADP This presentation serves as a primer for understanding the dental benefits market by highlighting key trends in enrollment, premiums, claims processing metrics, customer service metrics and employer and consumer opinion. In addition to summarizing key trends in the industry, NADP offers its opinion on what to expect in the year to come from an economic and public policy perspective. The presentation utilizes data from NADP's Statistical Reports and from other research conducted throughout the prior year. Life Panel Discussion on In force/renewal Management Michelle Galle, Securian; Doug Lamond, Symetra Underwriters play a critical role in retaining group business, which is challenging in today s marketplace. Join us to discuss how underwriters approach in force and renewal underwriting and hear what drives broker and client decisions to release RFPs and/or move business.

Michael McGrath, International Risk Consultants; Tery Baskin, Rx Results Drug costs in the United States are approaching $400 billion dollars per year. Pharmacy drug costs are increasing an average of 7.1% annually, while specialty drugs are increasing as much as 25% to 30% annually. Specialty drugs account for less than 1% of all prescriptions, but account for 28% of all drug costs. At current trends, that number could reach 50% by How did we get to a $400 billion annual spend on drugs? What is the Rx for this spending trend? Disability Leave Management/ADA/Legislative Changes/Compliance Alex Dumont, Sun Life; Kim Nason, Sun Life Leave management is more than tracking reasons why an employee is not at work on a particular day. These products are a valued added service where carriers/administrators solve employer s problems leading to a favorable stickiness byproduct. This session will discuss needed service capabilities, legislative changes, back end reporting competencies and learnings from administering many programs. Over the years insurance companies have changed their requirements, improved turnaround times and are considering totally noninvasive methods of underwriting for the future. Bill Thygerson, Underwriting Manager, Dominion Dental This interactive workshop will discuss the gradual loosening and elimination of underwriting guidelines, the frequency of exceptions made, and the changing authority of underwriting within the quoting process. Lately, Underwriting requirements are becoming more relaxed, with more and more exceptions made, or worse they're simply being disregarded or dropped. Remember the old days when Underwriting Guidelines actually meant something? This workshop will look at some common underwriting guidelines that are being eroded, and the extra risk introduced as a result, and the different ways that sales funds can be implemented for rate exceptions. We will examine the consequences from a risk, profitability, and new business perspective.
