COMMERCIAL SURETY Commercial surety bonds are generally required by state laws and statutes, and guarantee some aspect of a principal s occupation. A good example is a contractor s license bond, which guarantees the contractor will comply with the required city or state codes. There are many types of commercial surety bonds and we have the expertise and experience to help you and your client get the right one, fast. A fidelity bond should be considered when one or more of your client s employees are entrusted to handle cash or other valuable assets. Fidelity bonds include: Business Services (janitorial bond); good for contractors, janitorial services and dog and house sitters Standard Employee Dishonesty; good for professional offices (doctors, dentists) and non-profit organizations (Boy Scouts and condo associations) ERISA; required by trustees of pension plans 9

Our Bond Automated System (BAS), located on the Agent Center, allows you to quickly and easily issue many of your commercial bonds, including ERISA and Business Services. Because bonds are stored electronically, you can print your bonds and powers-of-attorney from your desktop. HOW TO BUY A BOND 1. Go to Agent Center > New Business > Surety and Fidelity 2. Click Commercial Bonds 3. Click Buy a Bond 4. Choose Bond Type State (obligee state) Bond Class Bond Category Obligee Company 5. Premium calculation Attorney-in-fact (person signing on behalf of surety company) Effective date (provided by insured) Penalty (coverage amount, in whole dollars) 6. Premium quote This section summarizes previously entered data, and displays premium and commission rate 7. Agent information This section requests important contact information 8. Buy a bond This section requests information on principal, owner, etc. Information requested varies based on bond type 9. Review This section allows you to confirm information before clicking submit 10. Decision NOTE: If the bond you need to purchase isn t available on BAS, notify us and it will be added to the system. If approved, print document set (bond, powerof-attorney) If underwriting is required, we will notify you of the submission status within 24 hours After providing bond to insured, depending on bond type, the insured may need to file bond with obligee 10

11 ATTACH A RIDER This function allows you to make changes to an active bond (any bond having a bond number). Active bonds can be searched either by bond number or applicant name. To attach a rider, follow these steps: 1. Find a bond Select and enter either bond number or applicant name Click Submit 2. View bond Select Action Click Do Action Make necessary changes 3. Submit for approval Address changes are automatically approved All other changes must be approved by underwriting; please allow 24 hours 4. Once approved, print document set rider highlights Only non-premium riders (customer name, bond description) can be attached Premium riders (premium amount, effective date) can only be attached by calling for assistance New information must be entered in the fields where current bond information is located Old information must be entered in rider question fields 11

Jeff Cose Associate Vice President Jeff leads the middle market contract and commercial surety and fidelity underwriting teams that primarily service the independent and exclusive Nationwide insurance agents. He oversees underwriting, profitability, marketing and strategy development. Jeff began his career with Nationwide in 2001 as a contract surety bond underwriter and has held various management and leadership roles in the company. Jeff received his BS from Simpson College with majors in accounting and economics and his MBA from Iowa State University with a marketing emphasis. He also earned his Associate in Fidelity & Surety Bonding designation from The Institutes and is a member of the National Association of Independent Sureties (NAIS). Kim Wells Commercial Bond Director Kim was appointed Commercial Bond Director in 2004 after joining Nationwide as an underwriting specialist earlier that same year. With over 35 years of surety industry experience, Kim has held various leadership positions including underwriting manager and assistant vice president over her career. She oversees the Des Moines underwriting and processing operations of the commercial surety division, servicing all states. Kim is accountable for commercial underwriting requirements, profitability and marketing. She is an active member of both the National Association of Independent Sureties (NAIS) and the Surety Association of Iowa. Bill Downing Surety Claims Director Bill has over 25 years of surety industry experience and has served in key surety claims leadership positions before joining Nationwide in Bill is very active in both professional and educational development within the legal and surety industries, best exemplified by co-editing three surety publications: The Law of Probate Bonds, The Law of Motor Vehicle Dealer Bonds and Bad Faith and Unfair Claim Handling Practices Issues. He is a member of the American Bar Association Tort and Insurance Section and a member of the Fidelity & Surety Law Division. Bill is a graduate of Drake University College of Law and DePauw University. 12

13 Guy Tenold Senior Underwriting Consultant Guy is a member of Nationwide s contract surety underwriting team as a Senior Underwriting Consultant. Guy started his surety career in 1987 as a bond underwriter with Merchant s Bonding and was a senior underwriter for Old Republic Surety Company. He joined The Insco Dico Group in 1995 and was most recently an Assistant Vice President/Branch Manager for AmTrust Surety (formerly Insco Dico). Guy earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University with an emphasis on Agriculture Business and Finance. He holds his AFSB designation and is a past President of the Iowa Surety Association. 13
