CEO At present I am working on a Greenfield Project, to start ZURICH in Colombia, as a start up. The first phase will be the opening of a Representative Office for the Reinsurance Division, and the second phase the start up of an Insurance Company. The filings processes will start in June 2014, and is estimated to last from 12 to 15 months. MAPFRE ASISTENCIA Madrid Spain General Director of Corporate Business January 2013 to December 2013 The Group created the Division in order to integrate several aspects in the operation of the different divisions within the MAPFRE Group, as well as to review the strategy to define the most effective presence in the different countries and markets. The finding of synergies between the different units, starting with the Division of Asistencia and Reinsurance, and Direct Insurance, generated savings for over 10 million dollars.
I designed a work plan that represent significant savings for the Group by integrating units that are duplicated in several countries of LATAM, avoiding duplicities, that is in the implementation process until At the same time, I supported the newly created unit of Strategic Definition in terms, of defining new metrics, and new organizational chart, to define the continuity of holdings, and the best structure to support the new challenges, of a customer oriented company instead of a product focused one. MAPFRE U.S.A Webster Massachusetts Executive Vice President March 2011 to December 2012 Opening of new Distribution Channels, to complement the traditional channels of independent agents, that was the only one used by MAPFRE in the USA. Among them, we established a new sales division at automobile Dealerships, Supermarket stores, traditional brokers, unknown to the Company until then. Definition and launch of new lines of business that are more profitable within the USA market, such as renters, motorcycles, boats, and by state, we opened operations in California, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. Definition, establishment and launch of a Life Insurance Operation Unit, through the opening of branch office of MAPFRE Puerto Rico, leveraging the permission and success of the life insurance division from the island to the mainland. Revision and launch of incentive Programs to intermediaries. Design and Definition of a cost containment program, that was implemented in MAPFRE SEGUROS DE COLOMBIA S.A. President & CEO January February 2011 MAPFRE COLOMBIA, was acquired by the Spanish Group in Now is the second largest Insurance Company in the Colombian Market with sales of aprox U.S$800 million, and market share of 10,2%. Broad offer of insurance products: life (term, whole, annuities, educational) Property (automobile, fire, theft, bond, agricultural, homeowners smallbusiness, D&O, surety) Workers Compensation, health, among others. Since 2003 we integrated both life and Non Life Insurance companies, that until then, operated in separate ways. The integration itself was a task; from operational, personnel, financial and technical aspects, that was successfully achieved within the first year of the process. The property company was concentrate in automobile business with over 80% of the premiums coming from that line, and subsecuent losses, because the colombian market is not regulated, and therefore fiercy competed. While growing the traditional business we opened new lines, as the above mentioned. That company was ranked as # 18 in 2003; and by the end of 2011 is #2 regarding written premiums. Year after year we surpassed all budgets, both in sales and profits with an average growth of twice the local market. Implementing an strategic vision, focusing on the profitable projects, cost reduction; efectiveness were the main ingredients of success.
Main Achievements Smooth Integration Process. (Not downsizing) Opening of 145 offices all over the country. In 2003 there were only 30 branches; by the end of 2010 we have 175. Increase of market share, from 2% in 2003 to 10,2% by the end of 2011 Final results went from 3 million dollar loss in 2002 to 45 million dollar profit in 2011 Opening of new lines of business both in life and in Non Life (Microinsurance, educational, health, workers compensation, annuities, agricultural, home, aviation, electricity, bond; Professional third party liability) By the end of 2011 MAPFRE is Ranked as Number 3 in top of mind of consumers. Ranked among the 25 best companies to work in Colombia. According to Great Place to Work Survey. We have 720 employees. Becoming a member of The Hall of Fame for the application of BALANCE SCORECARD, with the direct participation of Professors Norton and Kaplan from Harvard University. MAPFRE COLOMBIA s experienced was presented in the San Francisco s Summit, I was the spokesperson. The first company within the financial sector of the Andean Pact Countries to establish a branch abroad, in Ecuador. After operating 1 and a half year the Group purchased another company, where I was also the President of the Board of Directors. FITCH AA rating for MAPFRE COLOMBIA. Leadership in microinsurance (insurance for the poor) Our case has been studied at the Microinsurance Summit in London and Miami. I was the spokesperson, on both ocassions. Change of reinsurance structure, in We were the first colombian company to adopt a non proportional coverage, that allowed us to grow considerably. Implementation of client oriented structure, since Where we focus our sales force on clients more than on products. For five consecutive years MAPFRE COLOMBIA is the only insurance company operating on agricultural and crop insurance. The investment portfolio went from U.S.$ 45 million dollars in 2003 to U.S$ 890 million dollars in All grows have been organic. Both MAPFRE Colombia and myself were part of the list of the 100 companies and leaders with Best Reputation. We became a multichannel, multiproduct company. No. 1 in sales through affinity companies, specially utility companies. In 2011, we were elected as one of the 25 th best companies to work in Colombia, according to GREAT PLACE TO WORK. MAPFRE COLOMBIA VIDA S.A. Febrero 1998 Enero de In 1998, due to the hard time the Property and Casualty Company that was acquired by the group in 1993 was going through, the Group decided to open a brand new Life Insurance Company. At that time I was the Executive Vicepresident of MAPFRE REINSURANCE Company in Colombia and the Andean Countries. I was called to study the life business in my country, and to open a new company. At that time the decision seemed risky, because of the bad experience with losses in the automobile business. The idea was not to contaminate the new Project with the experienced that the group had so far, in direct Insurance. I was appointed President since the very beginning, and
had to create and consolidate a team to start the new company with the support of MAFRE LIFE in Spain. We adapted some of their products, worked extensively with our team of Actuaries; and launch the first 7 products. From the very beginning we were recognized as the most innovative company. Despite all studies we managed to be a profitable company from the very first year. For me personally, it was also a great experience of leadership. In the reinsurance area, we had as clients only the insurance companies established; in Direct Insurance I came to deal with brokers, agents, different channels of distribution, direct clients and a larger number of employees. We also needed to position our brand, so marketing and presence within the media became very important. Developing of commercial networks, especially independent agents and sales employees. Launch and position of the Company. Developing and implementation of a new operational system imported from our headquarters, that has been changed in the last years but proved to be very efficient for the first 5 years of operation. Organizational Charts, permissions, actuarial technical notes before the governmental authorities were approved. Definition of accounting, technical, comercial and legal reports, both for managerial purposes, and for the authorities control. Participation in bankinsurance programs, Public Tents, affinity programs. Consolidation of different channels of production. Strategic Planning, follow up of business plan, budgets. Within the first 4 years of operation our company was positioned as No. 5 in written premiums and a 5% of market share. Opening of a special type of offices: Delegates all over the country, though we needed to expand, the resources were limited, therefore it was made in a very cost efficient way. Identification of various business opportunities, that helped positioned the Company. And at the same time developing strategies in marketing and reinsurance. Introduction of health Insurance, at the beginning it was a timid operation, that became important within a few years. Selection, consolidation of a professional team. MAPFRE REINSURANCE January February 1998 My first job was as Assistant of the Financial Vicepresident of the Company. I had the opportunity to study financial mathematics, accounting and tax laws. Within the first 6 months I was promoted to Administrative Manager, I was in charge of Human Resources and Legal Department. After three years I became the Financial Vicepresident, and was in charge of the Financial, Tax, Administrative and Legal Departments. At the very beginning the company was owned by local Insurance Companies. In 1990 it was purchased by MAPFRE REINSURANCE. I was the leader in the valuation team from the Colombian part, and worked closely with the team in Madrid.
In 1997, I was the leader of the project to concentrate the reinsurance activities within the headquarters of MAPFRE REINSURANCE; we closed the reinsurance company and opened a Reinsurance BRANCH in Colombia. This operation meant that the reinsurance liabilities were transferred to our headquarters, along with the assets that supported them. It was a way to simplify the operation and to optimize resources. We had to integrate concepts from different aspects, such as financial, taxes, international obligations, aspects in Spain an in Colombia, to leverage opportunities and prevent mistakes, specially from the regulatory standpoint. This has been the modus operandi of MAPFRE RE since then. After MAPFRE purchased the reinsurance Company we extended our operation to Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. As a reinsurance product we created the ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE Company (ANDIASISTENCIA) and I was the President until I left to found a Life Insurance Company. This has been one of the most profitable businesses of our group in Colombia. From the technical viewpoint we studied several methods of study the market risks accumulation; and start a service to benefit our clients. We imported special coverage in electricity business and create coverage for them. We were leaders in financial studies to obtain coverage for political risks and financial risks, as devaluation. We founded a Reinsurance Study Center to study different coverage s and adapt them to Colombian legal frame. Identification of various business opportunities, that helped positioned the Company. And at the same time developing strategies in marketing and reinsurance.
