1 official newsletter of the Highpointe HOA HIGHPOINTE observer of Dripping Springs June volume 1, issue Vi WAYS TO GAIN A NEIGHBOR: Meet Them. While marching up to their door with hand extended is great, the chance encounter works well, too. Introduce yourself at the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you take out the trash. Learn their names and offer a friendly: Hello, Good Morning or Howdy Doody when you see them. (As weird as Howdy Doody is, it does make you memorable.) Keep Them Informed. Contact them before undertaking something that might affect them, such as hosting a big party, building a fence or cutting down a tree. Contacting a neighbor in advance so rarely happens, it will take them weeks to recover from the shock and by that time the announced event will have passed. Seriously, you will gain their respect. Look for Things in Common. You both might like to garden, bike or jog. Zero in on what you have in common. Be a keen observer of your neighbors and look for tell-tale signs that can draw you closer. Point of View. From your neighbor s viewpoint, how does your compost pile, swing set or junk car look? Would you like that view? (If you do, refer to your neighbor s viewpoint). Be Appreciative. If a neighbor does something you like, tell them! They ll be pleased that you noticed the new awning, patio furniture, plants, etc. Assume the Best. Most people don t intentionally create problems. Assume the neighbor doesn t know about the annoyance when you speak to them. Your delivery will be dramatically kinder. And assume they will be cooperative. Be Candid. If your neighbor does something that bothers you, let them know as soon as possible in factual, not emotional terms. Be Calm. When discussing a point of contention, speak calmly, listen carefully and thank them for telling you how they feel. You don t have to agree or justify your behavior. If you don t react defensively, anger usually subsides, lines of communication remain open and resolution is possible. Best Advice of All. Treat others as you would like to be treated. This attitude will pave the way for good neighborliness. Love your neighbor as yourself. 4 Why Scoop The Poop? Besides being a nuisance, uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for our association. Next time you re tempted to leave your dog s droppings on the lawn, please remember these facts: 1. The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to affect home sales not just whether and for how much they sell, but how quickly. 2. The more residents complain about dog waste, the more time the manager must spend on enforcement rather than serving the association. 3. Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste. Reminder: Your assessment payments should be mailed to Community Association Banc, PO Box 65733, Phoenix, AZ If your payments are automatically sent by your bank we ask that you contact them to make the change in billing address. Are you in the loop? Wondering why you re not receiving the most current information in the community? Did you create a log in on the website and sign up for electronic bulletins? If not, then you are not in the loop. We encourage you to create a log in and sign up to receive electronic updates. Electronic updates will ensure that you receive important association communications. Lights out? Is there a light pole out in your area? If so, we ask that you send us the light pole number and exact street location (nearest address or cross street) to manager@southwestmanagement.net. We will add it to our list of repairs for the next service day. Note: The light poles are serviced every six-weeks. Susan J. 7 How dangerous is overheating in the summer months? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from , excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat, says Dr.George Luber, extreme heat expert for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Summertime activity, whether on the playing field, running, boating, or just enjoying the great outdoors, must be balanced with measures that aid the body s cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related illness. Know the symptoms of heat disorders and overexposure to the sun, and be ready to give first aid treatment. Heat Cramps- are strong muscle contractions and usually affect the abdomen and legs. The condition usually improves with rest, water and cooler conditions. Heat Exhaustion- caused by heat and dehydration but the effects are more serious than cramps. Symptoms may include paleness, dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, and an increase SUMMER HEAT CAUTIONS Stay Safe This Summer in body temperature. Rest, water and cool compresses (ice water on the back of the neck, etc) can help. For more sever heat exhaustion, IV fluids may be required. Heat Stroke- The most serious of the heat related conditions. Heat stroke is most commonly brought on by strenuous exercise in hot conditions. However, it can also affect non-active individuals if the temperature is high enough. Visual signs include flushed, red look to the skin, and the person often stops sweating. This is one key sign that an individual is in an over heated condition. Also, a person with heat stroke might become delirious, unconscious, or have seizures. Lowering the body temperature and getting fluids into the person as quickly as possible is imperative. Don t get caught off guard this summer drink plenty of water, wear plenty of sun-screen, and exercise early in the morning. Enjoy the summer season and stay safe. - Submitted by Valerie Salinas Copyright 2010 Peel, Inc. The Highpointe Homeowner's Association Newsletter - June 2010
8 In life, you can t avoid all risks and you shouldn t try, because endeavors that carry risk also bring the prospect of reward. And it s certainly the same in the investment world. So instead of trying to invest risk-free, which is impossible, learn to recognize the different types of investment risk while becoming familiar with your own risk tolerance. To start with, let s quickly look at some of the most common forms of investment risk: Risk of losing principal This is the type of risk most commonly associated with investing. You could lose some, or even all, of your principal if you sell an investment, such as a stock, whose value has dropped lower than the purchase price. You can t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but you may be able to reduce it by buying quality stocks and holding them long enough to overcome short-term market drops. Inflation risk With an investment that pays a fixed rate of return, such as a certificate of deposit (CD), you run the risk of not keeping up with inflation, which means you could lose purchasing power over time. Consequently, it s a good idea not to overload on these types of investments. FINANCIAL FOCUS Interest-rate risk When you own a bond, your investment is somewhat at the mercy of changing market interest rates. For example, if you buy a bond that pays four percent interest, and market rates rise so that newly issued bonds pay five percent, the relative value of your bond will go down; no one will pay you face value of your bond when they can get new ones that pay higher rates. Of course, if you hold your bonds until maturity, which is often a good idea, you can avoid being victimized by interest-rate risk. Concentration risk This type of risk occurs when you have too much of your money concentrated in one area, such as in a particular stock or in one industry. If a downturn strikes that stock or industry, your portfolio could take a big hit. To combat this type of risk, you need to diversify your holdings among stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments. While diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, it can help reduce the effect of volatility. In addition to understanding the above types of risk, you also need to be familiar with your own risk tolerance and how it affects (Continued on Page 9) Austin Metro Locations Free Personal & Business Checking 250+ Free ATMs Across Texas Car + Home Savings Home equity loans up to 60 mo 66 months Plus no closing costs** 10 years fixed 15 years fixed 4.89%* 5.19%* Auto loans New, Used or Refinance 3.45%* 3.75%* certificate of deposit 1 1 regular - min. deposit of $1,000 required comm. real estate loans 20 year Amortization/ no Pre-Pmt. 9 Financial Focus - (Continued from Page 8) your investment strategy. If you are constantly worried about the market, you ve probably got too many investments that are at risk of losing principal. At the other end of the spectrum, if you re always concerned that your portfolio won t grow enough to generate the income you ll eventually need for retirement, you may be investing too conservatively and, as a result, you re inviting inflation risk. Ultimately, you need to match your own risk tolerance with a strategy that allows you to achieve your goals. This will require selfawareness, patience, discipline and, at times, a willingness to move outside your own comfort zone. By learning to balance and manage risk, you can ultimately put yourself in a position to pursue your investment strategy. Sudoku The challenge is to fill every row across, every column down, and every 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9. The Highpointe community has a rule which states that all dogs must be on a leash when not on your property. During my visits to Highpointe I often observe dogs roaming the community without a leash or owner in sight. This is irresponsible and potentially dangerous to the dog and your neighbors. The dog may be harmless but a child or non pet owner can be made to feel threatened by an animal that approaches them. Please be a responsible pet owner and keep your dog on a leash when not on your property.
