1 Union County Safety Council Newsletter June 2018 EDITION Information - Cooperation - Motivation May Recap BWC Rating Plans & Programs There are several BWC rating plans available to businesses. You should check with your BWC representative to see which one best suits your company. Group Experience: This provides upfront discounts to group members, both public and private. It is the oldest and most popular rating plan and is very stable. Group Retrospective: This is a group of like employers. You pay premiums based on experience and there is no upfront discount. Claim costs are evaluated at 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months. If your premium is less than the standard premium then you will receive a rebate. Individual Retrospective: This is a semi self-insured plan. You receive an upfront discount and you pay claims for 10 years. This plan will have quite a bit of risk and is more unique. The greater the portion of the risk assumed, the greater potential reduction in premiums. Deductible: Employers can lower their premiums by receiving an upfront premium discount in the form of a per claim deductible. This plan encourages employers to manage their workers compensation claims. This plan also has quite a bit of risk. One Claim: This plan is for employers that have been removed from the Group Experience program due to a significant claim. You will receive an upfront discount of 20% the first year, 15% the second year, 10% the third year, and 5% the fourth and fifth years. Experience Modifier (EM) Capping: You reduce the impact of EM increase due to Group Rating removal or an expensive claim. EM increase is capped at 100% from the previous year. Destination: Excellence: Unfortunately, workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths affect many lives in Ohio. They impact not only the injured worker, but their family and friends as well. This program helps you to increase workplace safety, enable injured workers to recover sooner and return to work, and adds convenience and savings to managing workers compensation insurance policy. Drug-Free Safety Program: This is a voluntary safety program developed to address workplace use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. It is designed to help state-fund employers more effectively prevent on-the-job injuries and illnesses by integrating drug-free efforts into their overall workplace safety program. Go-Green Rebate: This reduces paperwork hassles and helps the environment. Employers can receive a 1% premium rebate. Lapse-Free Rebate: Employers can receive a 1% premium rebate simply by paying premiums on time and not having a lapse in coverage during the past 60 months. 2 Better You, Better Ohio! Ohio, like much of the nation, is facing major health challenges driven primarily by obesity, aging and the rise in chronic diseases. As of 2017, Ohio s health ranking stood at 39th among the 50 states. These health challenges and outcomes are mostly associated with lifestyle behaviors. This program provides resources and support services to prevent injuries because of improved workforce health and safety, reduce absenteeism and improve presenteeism, reduce the severity of an injury, increase the speed of recovery from an injury, and reduce time away from work due to an injury. Go to go.activehealth.com/betteryoubetterohio to verify that you meet the participation conditions and then enroll. New BWC Website Over the past several months, BWC has been making major changes to their website. If you have not had a chance to check it out yet, please do! June is National Safety Month June is National Safety Month! A time to highlight the leading causes of preventable injury and death. One small change can make a big difference so please... Work to ensure that no one gets hurt.
3 Heat Related Illness; It Is A Matter of Degrees ( The ability to work outdoors can be an added job benefit. Many people design their careers around outdoor work because they can t stand sitting in an office all day. But for all the benefits of working in the great outdoors, there also are risks, especially in extreme weather. As we welcome summer, avoiding heat-related illnesses should be at the top of every outdoor worker s mind. Thousands of people get sick and hundreds die every year in the US from exposure to natural heat. You don t need a 90-degree day to be at risk for heat illness at work. Time of day, level of exertion and physical limitations also can contribute to heat-related illness. Anyone can be at risk, but employees in agriculture, construction, landscaping, and other strenuous outdoor jobs are particularly vulnerable. Workers required to wear or carry heavy gear also are at higher risk. As temperatures rise, the body releases heat more slowly. As humidity increases, sweat evaporation decreases making the body s cooling process much more difficult. In the early stages of heat illness, a worker might experience cramps or muscle spasms. This can quickly progress to heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion is serious, but heat stroke can lead to death. All heat illnesses are preventable, but often the effects of overheating are not anticipated or recognized. Before heading out in the sun, check the weather and plan accordingly if high temperatures are forecast. Stay hydrated and avoid caffeine and alcohol. Wear lightweight clothing, a hat with a brim, and sunscreen. And avoid strenuous work between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Workers should limit their time in the sun and increase their recovery time indoors. This often means increasing the number of workers per task so managers should schedule shifts accordingly. Bring Safety Home ( Summer fun usually means beaches, pools, and boating. But no matter where you live or what time of year, the importance of practicing safety around water cannot be overstated. It only takes a second for tragedy to strike. Hundreds of children between the ages of 1 and 14 drown each year. Nearly 30% of home drowning incidents occur when a child falls into a pool or is left alone in a bathtub. The younger the child, the greater the risk. While we usually associate young children with water risks, teens and young adults also face potential harm. Mainly because they prioritize fun over safety. Do not go in the water if you do not know how to swim Never swim alone Learn CPR and first aid Be mindful of currents; do not try to fight it; stay calm and swim parallel to the shore Swim in areas with a lifeguard Do not roughhouse Do not dive in unfamiliar areas Never drink alcohol when swimming; alcohol is involved in about half of all male teen drownings Each year, there are thousands of boating accidents and hundreds of deaths in the US.
