4 Accidents at work In the public sector approx accidents were reported in For some casualties, life will never be the same again. More than 400 accidents were fatal. Most accidents can be avoided by following safety practices. Quelle: DGVU

6 Statutory accident insurance Accidents at work Any employee or student is insured. Insurance is provided whether employment is permanent or temporary, full-time or part-time. The insurance is irrespective of age, gender or nationality. The membership to the statutory accident insurance is entirely financed by contributions made by Jacobs University Bremen. Employees and students do not make any financial contributions. For scholarship holders without employment contract or enrolment there is no insurance cover!
7 Accidents at work What is insured? Occupational accidents: accidents at work or on official journeys Commuting accidents: accidents on the direct way between your home and JU. Occupational diseases
8 Accidents at work Insurance benefits are e.g.: ambulant and clinical treatments pharmaceuticals and medical devices annuities (e.g. if you are incapable of working)
9 Accidents at work What to do in case of an accident? use first-aid supplies (inside first-aid boxes) fill in the first-aid logbook (inside the first-aid box) report any accident immediately to your supervisor if necessary call an ambulance (contact CL beforehand) or visit a doctor in case you are incapable of work for more than 3 days fill in the form Notice of accident
10 Notice of accident - available at the HR department or the registrar - complete the form (in German!!) -send the completed notice of accident back to HR department or the registrar - a copy of the form is sent to the insurance company and to the authorities
11 Emergencies In case of an emergency (fire or life-threatening condition) emergency phone code: 0112 then inform the main gate immediately at 911

14 Emergencies Everyone is obligated to render first aid! People with first aid training are present on campus First aid boxes contain first aid supplies to support your efforts Please inform yourself about first aiders and first aid boxes in your area
15 Emergencies Eyewash (in laboratories) If chemicals splashed into your eyes, use an eyewash continuously for at least 15 minutes!
16 Emergencies Safety shower (in laboratories) Use a safety shower in the event of a chemical spill. Pull the handle and remove clothing that may be contaminated with chemicals, to allow the skin to be rinsed. Shower head handle

18 In a case of fire In a case of fire, inform the fire department immediately via phone or fire alarm! fire alarm emergency phone code: 0112 then inform the main gate immediately at 911
19 In a case of fire use the available fire extinguishers to fight the fire (without endangering yourself!) by the sound of the fire alarm leave the building calm and without panic. Close the doors, but never lock them! leave the building by following the marked escape routes. Don t use lifts! If escape routes are not accessible, close the doors, attract attention and wait for the fire fighters
20 In a case of fire Go to an assembly point outside the building Keep a safe distance from the building Be sure that everyone left the building by finding your colleagues Do not re-enter the building until authorized to do so!

24 Fire prevention In general: - bans concerning smoking and open flames need to be adhered to at all times All buildings: - smoking is prohibited Rooms with specific danger: - open flames and fire must not be handled
25 Fire prevention Escape routes must be accessible at all times e.g. corridors, hallways, stairwells, emergency exits
26 Fire prevention Wedging open fire doors is strictly forbidden! Fire doors prevent fire from spreading

28 Fire classes This class deals with ordinary combustibles, such as wood, clothes, paper, many plastics, and other common materials that burn easily.
29 Fire classes This class deals with flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, tar and alcohol.
30 Fire classes This class deals with flammable gas, such as hydrogen, methane, acetylene and propane.
31 How to extinguish a fire? Extinguish a large scale fire front to end and from the bottom up Extinguish a fire of dropping and flowing material top down If available, use several fire extinguishers simultaneously (not consecutively!) After putting out the fire, be aware of a re-ignition!!
