1 Strategic Planning Discussion Fire Department April 20, 2015 As a part of the 2015 City Council Strategic Plan, an overview of the Fire Department mission, guiding principles, and policy issues to consider
2 Policy Issues to Consider Mayor, Council, and Manager Vision, Mission, and Values Setting the aspirations for the future of our community, the purpose of government, and defining the principles by which we govern Current City of Des Moines Goal Statement Public Safety Residents and visitors will experience a sense of safety in all neighborhoods and in all activities
3 2015 City Council Strategic Plan Fire Department Des Moines Fire Department Mission Statement (Purpose) To assist the public in the protection of life and property by minimizing the impact of fire, medical emergencies, and potential disasters or events that affect the community and environment
4 2015 City Council Strategic Plan Fire Department Des Moines Fire Department Guiding Principles Services will meet the needs of customers and will be efficient, sustainable, and financially responsible to stakeholders The organization will be structured to deliver services using best practices and in ways that reflect well on the City and its partners All personnel will be challenged to perform at the highest levels, experience a feeling of both ownership of and being of value to the organization, and to have leadership that is transparent, open, decisive, and courageous
