It was conceived with the original mission to improve the relationship between the SPVM and Montreal Aboriginal homeless community. Through the process this agreement has evolved to take a holistic approach and encompass the Aboriginal community as a whole. Safety of Aboriginal women, community relations and prevention programs are some of the key issues highlighted in this agreement. Th e NETWORK b elieves partnerships and collaborations are important steps to take to continue to address ongoing effects of colonialism and assimilation policies and practices such as the residential schools, Indian Act, and the overrepresentation of Aboriginals in the youth protection system. We strongly support the broad-based calls for a national inquiry and action plan into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal women while simultaneously building local policing and community strategies to respond to this pressing issue. The agreement came out of a careful process lead by the collaborative work of a small team that included representatives fro m the NETWORK, the SPVM, Makivik, Quebec Native Women, Missing Justice, the Cabot Square Project, Quebec Native Parajudicial Services, and Projets Autochtones du Quebec among others. It has been developed with careful consideration of the uniqueness and diversity in the Aboriginal community and was reviewed and approved by a community advisory committee of Aboriginal people with experiences of homelessness. As the urban Aboriginal population continues to grow in Montreal, a collaborative agreement between the SPVM and the community is an important and groundbreaking way to foster preventative approaches, open communication, and understanding. Note : Only articles written by the NETWORK reflect its position.
