17 Regional Development Plan of Bucharest-Ilfov (IV) Environmental Quality Green space per capita in Bucharest is situated slightly below European norms (23.21 sqm / inhabitant vs. 26 square meters / inhabitant required). Groundwater presents quality deterioration: a quarter of the groundwater monitored in Bucharest Ilfov region presents exceeded threshold values for certain pollutants and 7 communes are classified in the national list of vulnerable areas to nitrate pollution. Increasing demand for drinking water in the Bucharest Ilfov (34% compared to 2005) is not covered by the existing distribution capacity. Collection, selection and storage of waste is undersized to waste production recorded in the region. 17
