Political priorities of call 2012 Political priorities translated into operational objectives for the Marco Polo programme SSS-MoS projects reducing polluting emissions of maritime transport (low sulphur fuels, LNG powered vessels etc.) - political priority max 20% of the available budget Inland Waterway Transport max 10 % of the available budget as political priority Single Wagon Load Traffic lower min modal shift threshold: 30 M tkm 7 Maritime projects in the call 2012 Specific political priorities for SSS-based Modal shift, Motorways of the Sea and Catalyst actions Open for all SSS and MoS projects to receive funding priority: 20% financial priority in the budget and extra points can be given if reducing polluting emissions- low sulphur fuels, LNG, use of shore side electricity, gas exhaust scrubbers. Possible unacceptable distortion of competition - a concern in particular in the maritime sector special evaluation process put in place -> became an eligibility criteria!!! 8 4
Maritime projects in the call 2012 Specific political priorities for environmental conditions and incentives for maritime projects under MO, CAT or MoS: (gives the awarded projects a priority, this is not an obligation!) You navigate outside the European Sulphur Emissions Controlled Areas! Maximum 0,5% of Sulphur content in the fuel used You navigate inside the Seca s! Maximum 0,1% of Sulphur content in the fuel used In those 2 cases you will receive priority points and could benefit from the advantage of the 20% of the budget political priority
Marco Polo: Who are the beneficiaries? Over the period : 182 grants awarded (10% are common learning actions) 664 companies involved 50% of grant beneficiaries are SMEs 11 First global environmental results of the programme since 2003! 6
Results of Marco Polo I Since February 2012, we have finalised all G.A. under MP I and final results are available! Over 4 years, 22,1 billion tkm have been avoided on EU roads thanks to the cooperation between Industry and the EU. These are trucks trips over a distance of 1000km (Berlin/Paris) with an average load of 18 tons of freight! 13 First results of Marco Polo II The expected results for the 4 first years of MP II The G.A. signed for the first 4 years, may avoid around 35 billion tkm. Around trucks trips over a distance of 1500km (Milano/Warsaw) with an average load of 18 tons of freight! More is to come with the G.A. to be signed for the years 2011 to
What can be reasonably expected for the global results of the Marco Polo I and II programmes? At the end of the Marco Polo programmes operational implementation we may expect: To have shifted more than 4 million trucks from the road to other modes of transport with a journey distance of 1000km each. This represents a virtual traffic jam avoided of km! 15 What can be reasonably expected for the global results of the Marco Polo I programme? What are the CO² and Env Ben savings? Savings of 22,1 billion tkm With a conservative approach, 1,5 million tons of CO² have been saved For an investment of 32,6M (modal shift paid under MPI) At a price of e.g 35 /ton CO², savings of 52 M on the nongenerated CO² Global environmental benefit generated based on the MP calculator: 432,9M ROI: 13,3 env ben per 1 invested 16 8
