4 Tax programme TL01/15 The Taxation of Property Tuesday 13 October 2015 (14:00 17:00) Marion Hodgkiss BSc, FCA, CTA, ATT is Head of Tax at Kaplan Leadership & Professional Development, she qualified with Coopers and Lybrand in Liverpool. She has been Branch Chairman for the Merseyside CIOT, and became a member of the ICAEW Council when she finished her year as president of the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants. Marion works closely with clients to develop and deliver in-house tax courses to meet their particular training and business needs. She regularly delivers at the tax conferences of the main professional bodies on the latest developments in tax. Course detail. There are numerous issues to consider when investing in property, and the various taxes that apply must be understood when structuring an investment, be it in residential or commercial property. Course content: Issues relating to the ownership and disposal of residential property, including buy to let property and the issue of the principal residence, in particular what is required to show a property is PPR of the taxpayer The impact of the new rules on residential property owned by nonresident persons, and where they can affect a client who is thinking of retiring abroad who owns a UK residential property When buying property as an investment what is the most appropriate ownership vehicle, and how should it be financed? What tax relief is available on the different elements of expenditure on let property, including capital expenditure and the availability of capital allowances? Capital tax issues relating to let property and whether they qualify for the various business asset reliefs For the owner-managed business, what are the tax impacts of owning the property through the business or personally? The relevant VAT issues when buying, letting and selling property. TL02/15 Corporation Tax Update Tuesday 1 December 2015 (14:00 17:00) Ros Martin BSc, PhD, CTA spent her early career working for the Inland Revenue in a variety of jobs and dealing with a wide range of different areas of tax. Since leaving she has worked as a lecturer and consultant covering all areas of direct tax and SDLT. Having a consultancy background enables the training to be focused on current areas of concern and the practical implications of topics being discussed. Course detail. It is easy to think that very little has changed recently for corporate clients. This course will bring you up to date on the familiar and not so familiar elements of corporation tax. We will highlight also all the relevant changes in the 2015 Finance Acts, review important case law judgements and consider any changes in HMRC guidance. It will enable practitioners dealing with companies and their directors to consider the impact on their own clients and how best to advise them. TL03/16 Employment Taxes Update Wednesday 10 February 2016 (14:00 17:00) Rebecca Benneyworth MBE, BSc, FCA is a chartered accountant, lecturer, writer and consultant on a variety of taxes, lecturing throughout the UK, to accountants, business people and also to HMRC and the Treasury. She is editor of Tolleys Taxwise books, and consultant editor on Tolley s Income Tax and Whillan s tax tables. She is a past chair of the ICAEW Tax Faculty and was named Best Tax Lecturer at the Lexis Nexis Taxation Awards in 2007, and was awarded an MBE for services to the tax profession in Course detail. This course will update you on developments in employment taxes over the last two years. It will cover both legislative change and changes in process and procedure, and in particular digital developments affecting this area. Course content: Update on PAYE and NIC; new rules for NIC for apprentices; recap of the age-related NIC change in 2015; other proposed changes RTI processes and issues; recap of the penalty provisions and year-end process; key problem areas Taxation of benefits in kind recent changes; advice issues for clients Changes in Finance Acts 2015 pay-rolling benefits, expenses exemption, abolition of 8,500 rule, practical issues arising Other changes affecting employment taxes travelling expenses issues, helping your clients move to a P11D free world! TL04/16 Trusts Update Tuesday 26 April 2016 (14:00 17:00) Mark Ward LLB, CTA qualified with Arthur Andersen in 1989, having previously worked in the tax departments of a small and a mediumsized firm. He has been lecturing on a wide variety of tax matters for over 20 years to qualified practitioners and industry specialists in the UK and overseas. His ability to quickly establish a rapport with his audience, and discuss complex matters in a practical, and understandable style has led to Mark becoming much in demand on the lecturing circuit. Course detail. This course will refresh existing knowledge of trusts as well as recent developments in tax and tax planning with trusts. The emphasis will be on practical illustrations of this complex topic so those with little practical experience will not be put off by the unfamiliar rules, while those who are more experienced in the use of trusts will become aware of the latest do s and don ts. Detailed content will depend on latest decisions in the Courts and guidance/proposals issued by HMRC and the Treasury. Course content: Brief refresher on types and uses of trusts Income taxation of trusts basic issues and tax pitfalls and planning Capital gains tax on creation and during the life of the trust and CGT on cessation or termination Inheritance tax relevant property trusts, pre-march 2006 trusts and discretionary will trusts Other planning issues owner managers, interaction with transferable nil-rate band and sharing income from property an alternative approach. TL05 & TL06/16 Finance Bill 2016 Tuesday 21 June 2016 (09:30 12:30 and 14:00 17:00) Giles Mooney BSc (Hons), ACA, CTA is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser and has been involved in UK tax training for over 10 years. He has been presenting across various media channels for seven years. Giles started his career with a small firm of accountants and tax advisers, before working as a director of a large professional training company. He has written for a number of publications on various UK tax and business issues including writing PTP s own monthly publication Professional Tax Update. Giles entertains and educates professionals several days each week running tax seminars throughout the country. He is also the presenter of TAXtv and AccountingTV. Course detail. This course will familiarise you with the provisions of the current Finance Bill/Act. All of the major changes in the Finance Act will be explained, in the context of the clients whose affairs will be affected. Identified planning areas and pitfalls will be covered. Other current developments in taxation as they affect practitioners and their clients may also be included, depending on the significance and relevance of the Finance Bill/Act. 5 Practice programme PL01/15 Charity Accounts The Current Issues Tuesday 15 September 2015 (14:00 17:00) Bill Telford BA, FCA is a freelance lecturer, author and training consultant, specialising in auditing and financial reporting topics. He is a well known lecturer, able to make auditing and financial reporting both practical, interesting and relevant, in particular to the small and mediumsized firm. He is the co-author of Accounting principles for tax purposes for Bloomsbury Publishing and A Practical Guide to Transition to FRS 102 for Wolters Kluwer. Course detail. Accounting for charities is subject to continual change. Recent developments include legislative changes as well as regulatory developments. In particular the Charities SORP has been updated to reflect the changes introduced by FRS 102 and removal of FRSSE. This course will consider the practical impact in charity accounts that arise from these changes. It will also address key auditing issues together with issues for reporting accountants. PL02/15 FRS 102 FRS 102 light for Small Companies/FRS 105 for Micro Companies Tuesday 15 December 2015 (14:00 17:00) Guy Loveday BSc (Econ), FCA is a partner in the Professional Training Partnership and a director of PTP limited. He specialises in auditing and financial reporting updates for accountants in practice and in industry, and in finance courses for members of the wider financial community. He provides a consultancy service to help companies prepare their annual financial statements. He also makes occasional TV appearances. Course detail. In July 2015 the FRC issued a revised FRS 102 effectively including FRS 102 light for small companies. The withdrawal of FRSSE means that small companies will be using FRS 102 for accounting periods commencing on or after 1 January They may choose to use it up to a year earlier. Are you prepared? FRC is also issuing FRS 105 for micro companies following the micro regime. It is effectively a very light form of FRS 102 and is very different from the FRSSE. Are you planning to use it? This course will help companies and their advisers to appreciate the choices available to them and the changes that they face. PL03/16 Issues for Farming Clients Tuesday 23 February 2016 (14:00 17:00) Ros Martin BSc, PhD, CTA spent her early career working for the Inland Revenue in a variety of jobs and dealing with a wide range of different areas of tax. Farming clients have special issues which affect only them, as well as all the same tax issues as other clients. However, even with those latter tax issues there are many situations where unique facts particular to this business sector lead to additional complications. This course will consider how the basic tax legislation applies and what needs to be done to protect clients from additional tax bills. Covering income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax and stamp duty land tax, this will provide a comprehensive review of the issues that need to be considered. Topic issues will be added as required. PL04/16 Legal Update Tuesday 15 March 2016 (14:00 17:00) Louise Dunford LLM, LLB, Barrister, Cert Ed has been involved in training for accountancy professionals and for commercial companies for over 25 years, specialising in employment law, company law and professional negligence. She has been a consultant for many years for CompleteHR Ltd, providing HR support to SME clients on all matters connected with recruitment and employment, including contract drafting, investigations, dismissals, tribunal and settlement work. Course content: Company law update impact of the provisions of the SBEEA, recent cases on directors duties and duties of directors in a failing business Professional negligence update engagement letters principles, mehjoo and hirtenstein the messages for the general practitioner and limitation/ exclusion clauses Employment law update employment status update, shared parental leave and family-friendly rights and payroll issues overtime, sick pay and holiday Business law issues developments in partnership law Money laundering Other topics that may become relevant during 2015/16. PL05/16 Is Your File Fit for Purpose? Tuesday 17 May 2016 (14:00 17:00) Steve Collings FMAAT, FCCA is the audit and technical director at Leavitt Walmsley Associates Ltd, a firm of chartered certified accountants based in Sale, Cheshire. Steve is also the financial reporting technical editor for AccountingWEB.co.uk and is the author of several books on financial reporting and auditing. Course detail. With technical compliance becoming increasingly more important for professional firms, it is critical that your files can stand up to scrutiny. This course will look at the ways in which a firm can ensure its files are of a standard befitting that of a professional firm, as well as some of the more common disclosure errors made in the financial statements. 6 Commercial and business programme CBL01/15 Tax Update and Pensions Update for Accountants in Business Thursday 15 October 2015 (15:00 18:00) Jeremy Mindell BA (Hons), CTA, CIPD has been lecturing in taxation for over 20 years. His audiences have included tax and share scheme conferences, employees, external clients and staff. Well-known on the speaker circuit, Jeremy is in high demand for tax, pensions, share schemes and remuneration events. He is one of the few individuals in the country who has qualified as a chartered tax advisor but also has a Masters from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development. Jeremy worked for Coopers & Lybrand, Ernst & Young and Deloitte, on employment taxation, expatriate tax, international tax, profit related pay, US taxation and share schemes. He also dealt with HMRC investigations. Following this Jeremy worked at AMP and Henderson Global Investors where he was a director of the pension scheme. He is on the IFS Pro-Share advisory panel and a member of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisors. Course detail. This course is specifically designed to meet the CPD needs of accountants working in business. The emphasis is on recent developments in company and employee taxation as well as other relevant tax changes. CBL02/15 Strategic Leadership Thursday 26 November 2015 (15:00 18:00) Simon Hollington of Leadership Trust has 20 years experience of working with clients to maximise performance. He joined The Royal Marines from school and had a wide variety of roles, mainly focusing on operational commitments. He was part of the Central Planning Staff in the Ministry of Defence during the first Gulf War and was the principal MOD contact for the operation in Northern Iraq to assist the Kurds. Simon is now part of the Leadership Trust Team. He is qualified in coaching and mentoring and is a qualified Coach Supervisor, NLP, Time Line and Hypnotherapy Practitioner. His approach is to build a trusted relationship so that he is able to challenge current practice and allow individuals and organisations to release their full potential. Course detail. This course focusses on the leadership behaviours required for the execution of strategy and plans. It aids understanding of the varied responses to change, and covers leadership aspects of clear communication and sound decision-making, thereby enabling you to respond effectively to strategic and emerging business challenges. Employers and HR managers ignore this legal environment at their peril. The government is moving to a more employer friendly environment and away from employee protection, however there are still many pitfalls, in particular unlawful discrimination. The course is aimed at proprietors of small businesses and those who advise them, and is highly practical in approach, taking an HR perspective. CBL05/16 Business Acquisitions and Disposals Thursday 19 May 2016 (15:00 18:00) James Eyre-Walker BSc, MBA, FCA qualified in 1985 after training with Coopers & Lybrand in Birmingham. In 1986 he joined Howsons as an audit manager and began developing the firm s corporate finance service. He became a partner in Howsons in 1989 and led the Corporate Services Department. He continues to be actively involved in all forms of corporate finance activity including share/business valuation, corporate restructures and buying/selling businesses. Course detail. The course will review the whole process of buying and selling a business (which is two sides of the same coin), including the rationale for selling/acquiring, preparing for sale, finding a buyer or target, valuation considerations, common terms of acquisition, Heads of Agreement, due diligence, share/asset purchase agreement and post-completion integration of the acquired business.
