2 OVERVIEW Energy companies conducting business overseas continue to face increasing scrutiny from U.S. and foreign regulators. Compliance risk areas such as corruption in dealing with foreign government officials, the export licensing of oilfield services equipment, sanctions, and money laundering are all high stakes given the possibility of criminal and civil penalties. Energy companies in the international space must also deal with more recent developments in the areas of data privacy, anti-slavery, and corporate social responsibility initiatives. How should companies manage these increasing risks in the face of cost pressures? This course will provide attendees with the basic tools necessary to design and implement a risk-based compliance program, whether using existing in-house resources or external assistance. The course will provide attendees, whether or not they have prior legal experience, with a basic understanding of the laws and regulations that currently govern international companies. The course will also address the steps and practicalities of conducting internal investigations and how to effectively handle contacts with government regulators. He is responsible for overseeing Bristow Group s compliance with laws in the jurisdictions in which it operates, including laws related to export controls, anti-corruption, sanctions, and fair competition. Before coming to Bristow, David worked as in-house compliance counsel for two energy companies. He previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney s Office in Houston, where he prosecuted corporate fraud and international money laundering cases. He was a member of the Organized Crime Strike Force and received multiple awards from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for prosecutorial excellence. He began his career as a commercial litigation and appellate lawyer with Baker Botts LLP after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. David received his law degree from Duke University School of Law and holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from Stanford University. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS Case studies and PowerPoint presentations will be used in the instruction of this course. IACET CREDITS EUCI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). In obtaining this accreditation, EUCI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/ IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of their Authorized Provider status, EUCI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.
