1 VICTRIAN BUSHFIRES RELIEF CHARITY AUCTIN Friday March 13 th at 6pm Saturday 7 th February - Black Saturday - is a day that will be forever etched in the consciousness of Victorian residents. It was the day that television footage of rampaging bushfires was seen around the world, making the small towns of Kinglake, Labertouche, Marysville and others famous for all the wrong reasons. When the inferno was finally brought under control, thousands of homes had been destroyed, more than people were dead, and many more were recovering from often serious injuries. Almost every family in Victoria knows somebody who was directly impacted. A month later, and the bushfires have finally been pushed off the front pages of the newspapers. But the devastation remains: enormous expanses of bush have been reduced to blackened wasteland; roads are impassable; the shells of vehicles in which people died remain where they were incinerated; community facilities, from public halls to sportsgrounds, are unusable; water supplies remain contaminated. Many locales are still considered crime scenes and this has prevented the survivors from even starting the enormous clean-up operation. In short, this is a public nightmare of epic proportions. To their credit, the state and federal governments have combined to bring some measure of economic relief to the victims of Black Saturday. Emergency relief organisations, coordinated by the Australian Red Cross, have provided emergency housing, food vouchers, clothing and other necessities. Even the banks and insurance companies have shown some semblance of compassion. However, much more needs to be done. Why Not Run a Charity Auction? Countless thousands, perhaps millions of Australians (and many people from around the globe) have made significant contributions to the relief effort. The staff at Prestige Philately decided that we could help by conducting a charity auction of donated material. The results of that decision are now before you. More than separate donations have been received from collectors and dealers, and over 0 lots are now offered for your consideration. The estimates have been set at deliberately conservative levels but still total in excess of $,000. Lots range from interesting little items such as a Dutch sheetlet rushed out to raise funds for this same cause, to a complete sheet of the Five Shillings Sydney Harbour Bridge; from datestamps of post offices in affected towns to very fine Penny Blacks. Naturally, we expect the miscellaneous and Australian lots to attract great interest. And we hope that some of the more esoteric material will also spark your interest. Here s How It Will Work In short, every lot has to be sold on Friday. Consequently, there are no reserves in this auction. However, Starting Prices will generally be about % of the estimates. Please remember that the auction is in support of a great cause. We don t want to give things away so we ask you to bid responsibly, even enthusiastically! However, we will not reject bids below the nominal starting levels. This inevitably means that there will be bargains to be had. [Please note that offers below the advertised starting prices will be taken at their full value. For example, a lot estimated at $ will have a starting price of $. If you bid $, and are the only bidder, the lot

2 will still open to you at $. However, if you bid, say, $, and we get no higher offers, it will be sold to you for your offer of $.] n-line bidding is now open. You can place your bids via the internet until 5pm on Friday, and the Starting Prices will continue to be updated until that time. The public auction will commence at 6pm and results will be both ed and posted on-line immediately after the selling concludes. No Commissions!! We have made a commitment to donate every cent raised from the auction to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfires Relief Fund. That means we are charging no vendor s commission, and no buyer s commission. Not a penny. All of us at Prestige Philately are donating our time, our materials, and our enthusiasm for this important mission. So please bear this in mind and bid the full net amount that you would offer if there were commissions being charged. If you would normally reduce your bid by 10% or 15% to offset buyer s commission, please don t do it this time. If you do, you run the risk of missing out to bidders who appreciate the financial benefit of the commission not being charged. Time is Short!! Because of the short lead-time, the catalogue - and all the associated illustrations - is available on-line only. This means that our clients who do not have computer access will not be able to participate. This gives YU a great advantage because there may be less competition than might otherwise be the case. But don t procrastinate. Look at the catalogue now, and make your bids as soon as possible. If you think I ll get back to it later, you may forget about the Friday deadline and miss out altogether. You have only three days in which to lodge your bids. If you wish, you can download the catalogue as a permanent record of the sale. We will also have printed copies available for people who attend the sale or who come to view. To enable as many people as possible to see the material, viewing will be conducted from 10am until 8pm tomorrow (Wednesday 11 th ) and Thursday 12 th March. n sale day, Friday the 13 th, you can view lots from 9am until 5pm. The auction will commence at 6pm and naturally we welcome your attendance. Quick Despatch You are probably aware that we are conducting a sale dedicated to the GRI stamps of New Guinea on Saturday 14 th. Because that is a very compact auction, despatch will be much simpler and speedier than usual. This means that we expect to despatch lots from the Bushfires Charity Auction within a week. Provided you have established your creditworthiness with us, or provide your credit cards details when you bid, you can expect to have your purchases very promptly. (Naturally, we will not charge any fee for payment by Visa or MasterCard.) f course, if you attend the auction and pay (or make arrangements to pay) on the night, you can take your purchases home with you. We have been extremely pleased with the response of the philatelic community to our appeal for material for the charity auction. Hopefully, come Friday night, we will be even happier with the bidding and prices paid for the donated material. ur goal is to give the Red Cross a cheque for more than $,000. Please support the victims of Victoria s savage bushfires by bidding strongly and making the total realizations truly impressive.
