PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Australian Stamps used in TPNG Ex Lot Album of annotated WWII covers from Australian units throughout New Guinea and Papua with many scarce items & 16 registered covers, a few OHMS usages, stampless formular aerogramme, naval "dumb" cancels, four hand-illustrated covers etc, condition a bit mixed. (70+ covers) B Lot 426 Buin: 1951 Voyce cover to Rabaul with 2½d only tied by 'BUIN/27AU51/PAPUA NEW GUINEA' cds & endorsed alongside "½d paid/nsa" (= No Stamps Available), MV "Malakuna" ship cachet in rosine at upper-left, vertical fold. Philatelic but rare. During August 1946 Buin ran out of ½d stamps. The NSA endorsement was made & initialled by the postmaster. 250

A philatelic registered cover dated 6FE46 with "permanent" registration label No '10' sold for $7260 at the Premier Philatelic Auction of 30/9/2000.

One of the great rarities of PNG philately. PAPUA NEW GUINEA The post office at Salamaua re-opened 14/1/1946 & was closed on 16/4/1946. The cds is generally regarded as the rarest post-wwii PNG datestamp. A philatelic registered cover dated 6FE46 with "permanent" registration label No '10' sold for $7260 at the Premier Philatelic Auction of 30/9/2000. Very few registered covers are believed to exist, and this is the only example we have seen with a provisional registration label. With a 2005 article by John McNabb. 428 ** A/B Selection on leaves including blocks of 4 (many with imprint) to 2/6d plus 3½d black corner block of 12 & 1 single, /7d attle block of 12 with perf pip & imprint block of 4, 1963 Pictorials 10/- & 1 'SPEIMEN' Overprints both sizes, 1995 Tourism two First Day overs both with 65t Value Omitted, Postal harges SG D1 (badly toned) and SG D2-6 (two sets), 'Stamp/Duty/1d' on 6½d imprint block of 6 (toning) etc, all those we checked are unmounted. (300 approx) 6, Lot ** A Pictorials 9d opra block of 12 (2x6) from the right of the sheet with complete Plate Number '2' in the right-hand margin, a few faint bends, unmounted. Rare: the first example we have offered. 1, E A- Lot Pictorials 1 stamp-size "essay" of a native in headdress, apparently offset-printed in brown on thin card (68x76mm), tiny 'ESSAY' h/s on the reverse, faint vertical bend. Of unknown status. RPSofL ertificate (1998) states "cannot be certified as an officially generated essay". It must be noted that all Australian stamps of the period and, of course, the TP&NG 1952 Pictorials were all sophisticated engraved recess-printed productions. It seems unlikely that this relatively crude essay, unsuitable as it would be for recess printing, emanated from any official design source. It may have been privately submitted for consideration or it may be in the nature of a promotional item only. Notwithstanding these observations, it did sell at auction for $862 in Offer

As good a coverage of the various straight-line and other cachets as we have seen, many to or from Harry Voyce, but others to unfamiliar names. A few are from the pre-wwii period. This is a comprehensive study of the postal markings - including "relief" cds - registration handstamps and labels etc from the re-opening of the civilian post offices in 1945-46 until the mid-1970s,

8 Prestige Philately - The Tim Rybak ollection Page: 8 PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Postal History (continued) 450 Ex Lot 450 A wonderful collection of philatelic (mostly) and commercial covers arranged by post office from 'ABAU' to 'YOMBA' annotated in 30 quality springback albums filling three cartons. This is a comprehensive study of the postal markings - including "relief" cds - registration handstamps and labels etc from the re-opening of the civilian post offices in until the mid-1970s, plus some late-wwii material. There is far too much here to be able to provide an adequate description. However, suffice to say that all the rare markings we checked for are here. There are scads of registered covers, many with 'RELIEF' datestamps, others with hand-drawn registration cachets or makeshift labels, some with spelling errors on the cds or label. The only notable item missing is the Salamaua cover offered separately: Lot 427. Ex Dr WH (Bill) Fee. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a well-developed collection of attractive material. The albums could be pulled-apart and reformed as separate collections of "Australia Used in TPNG", "Registered overs", "All-Different Datestamps", "PAID & Other Auxiliary Markings", "Slogan ancels", "Airmail overs", "Opening Days", "Reliefs", "Pictorial Datestamps" etc. Even the used stamp value is significant, many covers being franked with better commemoratives, 1/7d or 2/5d attle etc. Overall the condition is fine to very fine but there is some toning, which is usually at the minor end of the scale. Our necessarily brief appraisal of the collection suggests there are more than 1700 covers in this lot, plus some pieces and stamps, with some mostly minor duplication. Based on our estimate, this equates to less than $6 per cover. If you were fortunate enough to be the only bidder, the average cost per cover would come down to a mere $4½ each! That's great buying in anybody's language, especially when you factor in all the scarce to rare items that abound throughout. (1700 approximately) 10, Ex Lot Papuan Philatelic Society cover service covers to Tim Rybak plus many duplicates that are unaddressed, generally fine to superb excepting that in 1990 some of the covers were on very poor grade paper that has discoloured, an array of attractive frankings and many covers are registered. By this stage most of the PPS over Service members had stopped collecting which has served to make this "modern" material extremely scarce. (320+) 750

A good lot. (68) Ex Lot 453 Two albums of 1950s-1990s covers with "relief" or provisional cancellations used at numerous post offices throughout the Territory. Many are on registered covers with registration labels that "tie" or confirm the usage at particular offices. Some commercial and OHMS usages noted. There are also some covers with the "permanent" datestamps that repleced the reliefs. As with the regular datestamps, the later material is very scarce because most over Service subscribers had opted out by the late-1970s. (119 covers) 800 Ex Lot Four folios of plain and commemorative covers plus some FDs including PSEs with an array of mostly pictorial cancellations. A number are registered including for the 1963 Scouts Jamboree, 1966 Rabaul Trade Show, 1967 Amelia Earhart and several Highlands Shows etc, generally very fine. (150 approximately) 250
