3 This will be MSA s fourth Canadian Insurance Financial Forum (CIFF). The CIFF is the single largest gathering of Canadian P&C insurance financial professionals, attracting hundreds of delegates from across the country. This accomplishment is a credit to the CIFF s advisory committees over the years and the many expert speakers and panelists that have presented since The CIFF is specifically designed to meet the needs of actuarial, accounting, finance and investment professionals in our industry as well as provide valuable information for board members in a concentrated, content-rich and rewarding day. You will have to work hard and pay attention but you will also have ample time for networking, including our closing cocktail reception. The upcoming CIFF is all about change, and change management. Change is buffeting the industry from all sides: The changing face of regulation, board expectations and accounting standards are daunting. OSFI s revised Corporate Governance Guideline is a case in point taking boards into areas hitherto reserved for senior management and fundamentally changing governance paradigms in other ways. Changes are also taking place in the anti-trust/competition space with far-reaching consequences for the industry. CRA is also on the move with an HST grab on affiliated cross-border reinsurance, changes in transfer pricing and other important developments. The operational landscape remains challenging with still soft commercial lines, flat-lined interest rates, catastrophes and uncertainty in auto lines. With this backdrop in mind, the CIFF 2013 Advisory Committee, made up of senior partners from major audit and actuarial firms as well as two insurer CFO s and a chief actuary, has put together another fantastic program this year: a program to address these challenges head on. Our luncheon keynote speaker this year, Dr. Mark DeVolder, knows all about change. In fact, the topic of his speech is Surviving and Thriving during Extreme Change.
