INFORM+INSPIRE Public Policymaker Education Program Overview and Update Provided by: Melissa Wheeler Ohio Insurance Institute Annual Meeting August 28, 2013 The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation
About the Griffith Foundation Not-for-profit education foundation Supports the study and teaching of risk management and insurance Two program areas: Public Policymaker Education Engaging the Next Generation The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 2
About the Griffith Foundation The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation is affiliated with The Institutes Effective May 1, 2012 The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 3
About the Griffith Foundation Engaging the Next Generation Initiative Industry-wide effort to attract young workers to the insurance industry Why? Talent vacuum and little interest Strategy amplification and aggregation The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 4
Goal of the Public Policymaker Education Program Information resource for lawmakers by providing relevant and objective insurance information. Why? Knowledgeable policymakers create better policy. Recognize false claims Reject proposals based on flawed understandings of how insurance works Our goal is to make your jobs easier by providing fundamental insurance knowledge that complements your efforts. The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 5
Independence from the insurance industry is very important to our success and credibility Programs offered as closed sessions for public policymakers only Allows for open dialogue among legislators and faculty Sustains independence of content Ensures nonadvocacy Instructors: Academics teach all seminars and workshops Typically, Ph.D. in risk management and insurance (RMI) at a university with an RMI program The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 6
We have been offering public policymaker education programs for over 20 years We have over 500 alumni from 49 states All programs are educational, nonpartisan and nonadvocacy Core content is basic Insurance 101 course created for legislators serving on committees dealing with insurance issues All programs are offered free to public policymakers The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 7
Matrix of Current Public Policymaker Programs The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 8
NCOIL Institute for Insurance Policy Professional certification program for NCOIL member legislators Since 2008, certifications awarded to 51 state legislators; 13 more earned AIP or CIP so far this year, including Ohio Representatives Hottinger and Stinziano Qualifying courses are Insurance 101 and the special-topic workshops at NCOIL s three major meetings throughout the year The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 9
NCOIL Institute for Insurance Policy has featured special-topic luncheon workshops at NCOIL meetings for the last seven years 2013 Ohio Legislator attendees were Representatives Hackett, Henne, and Stinziano and Senator Bacon Sampling of past workshops: Costs of Claims Fraud: Who Ultimately Pays? 2010 presentation by Sharon Tennyson, Ph.D., Cornell University Reinsurance 101: How It Works and the Impact on the Marketplace 2012 presentation by Kathleen McCullough, Ph.D., Florida State University Distracted Driving: Truth and Consequences 2013 presentation by Paul Atchley, Ph.D., University of Kansas The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 10
State Series Overview Offer Insurance 101 in state capitals Coordinate with the two committee chairs Invite state s insurance committee members to a two- to five-hour seminar Invite the state insurance commissioner to provide remarks and invite key staff, as appropriate The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 11
Insurance Committee Chair Seminars Content and format similar to the State Series Invite state legislators from around the country to a one-day Insurance 101 seminar Required course for NCOIL Institute for Insurance Policy certification The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 12
Public Policymaker Program Overview July 2013 Number of Policymakers Attending One of Nine Workshops and Seminars The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 13
Every participant of a public policymaker seminar or workshop is provided an evaluation to measure knowledge improvement and relevancy to legislative duties The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 14
Testimonials From Legislators The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 15
The Griffith Foundation What Does the Future Look Like? The affiliation with The Institutes allows us to improve the quality, effectiveness, and quantity of the programs New delivery mechanisms for public policymaker programs Improved flexibility Reduction of time commitment The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 16
Insurance 101 content is reaching less than 15% of state legislators New delivery mechanisms achieve a dramatic expansion On-demand insurance education to offer same content One size rarely fits all More choices for our legislative customers The new insurance resources will include: webinars, textbooks, and online courses The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 17
How Can You Help? State trade associations are critical to spreading the word to your state legislators about our efforts to: Inform public policymakers about the educational programs we offer Encourage public policymakers to attend programs Identify opportunities to give Griffith presentations to public policy and industry groups The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation 18
Thank you for your continued support of the Foundation! For more information contact: Melissa Wheeler (855) The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation
