With all the warm weather we ve had lately, it is hard to believe that the holidays are just a few weeks away! We had a great turn-out for the Fall Conference in Wright County in Buffalo. Our thanks go out to our Resource Coordinator Heather Stephens (Hennepin County) for all her hard work and planning. The speakers were great, and the program staff at the Wright County Jail were marvelous hosts and provided a wonderful setting for us. Thank you Jo, Mike and Randy! The Executive Board met on December 2 nd via conference call. Training Coordinator Shanna Krebsbach (Meeker County) and Vice-President Kim Neuman (McLeod County) have been busy planning the Spring Conference, scheduled for April 26 28, 2016 at Ruttger s Resort in Deerwood. They already have a lot of great speakers lined up, as well as some fun entertainment for Wednesday evening. I have always said that the MJPS conferences are some of the best, cost effective training that you can get, and 2016 won t be any different. Our next Executive Board meeting will be February 24 th, 2016 at 10:00am at the MSA Office in St. Paul. All our meetings are open to MJPS members, especially if you might be interested in being on the board and want to see what it is all about. In closing, I want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season as well as the promise for a brighter future as we ring in a New Year! Janet MJPS President

3 Newsletter P age 3 D a v i d G r a n t & K a y S i e b r a s s P r o g r a m s o f t h e Y e a r It is time to tell us about a great program happening in your jail. Every year we hear about a few great programs happening in our jails. There are plenty of great ones out there that we never hear about. This is your time to take some time and let us all know about your great program. I think we could see nominations for many of the programs in all of our counties. It is almost the end of the year, start taking the time this deserves and please submit your great program under one of the two criteria listed. I am including the information on the Dave Grant Award and Kay Siebrass award below. Kay Siebrass Program of the Year Award Criteria: Use of Volunteers and or Programs Staff Cost Effectiveness Innovations On-going Program Provides new skills The Kay Siebrass Award will be granted to the county jail that nominates a program that could be duplicated in any facility (large or small, rural or urban, etc.). One of the goals of MJPS is to share ideas that can be duplicated and to prevent programmers from reinventing the wheel. We also want to recognize new and innovative ideas, as well as the time & effort of volunteers in county facilities. Dave Grant Program of the Year Award Criteria: Cost effectiveness Innovations Utilization and/or Integration of Community Resources Provides new skills This award is named after Dave Grant, who was a Jail Programmer in Stearns County and who was also one of the founding members of MAJPS. It will be given to the county that nominates a program that has partnered with other resources in their communities and through other sources of funding (i.e. grants, commission from sale of vending, etc.). This program may very well have outside paid staff, teachers etc... running the program. Dave received the Programmer of the Year Award. Both of the awards are somewhat the same however the Kay Siebrass award is easily duplicated in other counties, and the Dave Grant Award uses Community Partnerships to provide the programming. The link to submitting these awards is located on the MSA website.
4 Jail Programmers: Please pass along the following information to your Investigators. The Department of Corrections is willing to offer a FREE PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Investigator Training Course. This would be opened for investigators only. The course of discussion would be conducting investigations of sexual abuse in a confined environment. If any investigators have an interest in attending, please contact Deb at at the Department of Corrections. This is in the early stages and the Department of Corrections is looking for a number of interested participates. Have a good day!! Shanna Krebsbach Jail Programmer Meeker County Sheriff's Office 326 North Ramsey Avenue Litchfield, MN shanna.krebsbach@co.meeker.mn.us MJPS Needs your help MJPS is purchasing a banner to use at our conferences. We are looking for a tag line for it. Let your creativity shine! Send your ideas to Mel at: melanie.hehr@co.anoka.mn.us You could win bragging rights for life
