1 Article I, Sectin 1 Natinal English Hnr Sciety The Eagle Chapter Bylaws This rganizatin is called The Natinal English Hnr Sciety, and ur chapter is called The Eagle Chapter. The chapter is lcated at Glenda Dawsn High Schl 2050 Cullen Blvd., Pearland, TX Article II, Sectin 1 The purpse f this rganizatin is t: recgnize n the natinal level thse wh, n the basis f academic grades and perfrmance, merit special nte fr past and current accmplishments; nurture these persns in such ways that they are encuraged t further develp their abilities in the varius fields f English; encurage members t use their talents in the service f thers; prmte literacy and a lifelng lve f literature at Glenda Dawsn High Schl and the cmmunity. Article III, Sectin 1 Pwers vested in this chapter include, but are nt limited t (these pwers shall be executed under the guidance f the later articles and the Dawsn Student Handbk): revisin f chapter bylaws, planning and rganizatin f NEHS, electin and dismissal f chapter fficers, inductin and dismissal f NEHS members. Article III, Sectin 2 The chapter advisr shall be a member f the English faculty, appinted by the principal, and may serve cnsecutive terms. The advisr is respnsible fr the direct, day-t-day supervisin f the chapter, maintaining files n membership, chapter histry, activities, financial transactins, and the chapter bylaws. The advisr shall als regularly review each member fr cmpliance with Sciety standards and bligatins and assist with the chapter fficers s they can understand and carry ut their duties as required. The chapter advisr shall be a vting member f the Faculty Advisry Cuncil and shall be designated a NEHS hnrary member but will nt pay the natinal inductin fee. Article III, Sectin 3 The faculty advisry cuncil shall cnsist f the chapter advisr and/r English teachers r ther Hnrary Sciety Advisrs within Dawsn High Schl and NEHS fficers f the current schl year (i.e., dependent upn the utlying circumstances, NEHS fficers may nt be invlved in the faculty advisry cuncil fr a particular situatin). The faculty advisry cuncil shall meet at least nce a year t review the prcedures f the chapter, select members, cnsider dismissals, and/r fr ther related matters. The faculty advisry cuncil shall develp and revise, when necessary, all chapter prcedures fr the selectin and dismissal f members and/r fficers.

2 Article IV, Sectin 1 Selectin fr membership is by a Faculty Advisry Cuncil, which is cnsistent with the chapter advisr and current NEHS fficers, and is based n: academic accmplishment in English and English-related curses, an verall academic accmplishment, integrity, hnr, hnesty. Article IV, Sectin 2 The specific requirements fr membership shall be as fllws: Must have been in attendance at the schl fr the equivalent f tw semesters prir t being cnsidered. If special circumstances merit (such as cming frm a different schl), the Faculty Advisry Cuncil may waive the semester regulatin. Must have cmpleted the equivalent f tw semesters (r ne full credit) f English prir t inductin as a member. Must have achieved a minimum verall grade pint average f a 3.0 (n a 4.0 scale) prir t inductin as a member. Must have an 80 r abve in AP r Pre-AP English classes. Must have a 90 r abve in regular English classes. Meetings will be n the first Friday f every mnth during Eagle Hur A, with a makeup meeting the fllwing Mnday mrning. Only ne absence is allwed per semester. An indicating the circumstances surrunding nn-attendance frm mnthly meetings will be sent t a member wh is absent. Mre than tw absences within a semester will immediately cnstitute the fllwing: autmatic prbatin via , an ensuing meeting with the NEHS Advisr, additinal inside hurs required t make up attendance. Shuld n respnse r bligatins be fulfilled, immediate dismissal will be issued and an sent indicating remval frm NEHS. Must have a passing grade in all classes AND display academic hnesty in all classes. Cheating, plagiarism, and lying can cnstitute immediate remval frm NEHS. Officers can lse their fficer psitin and/r be permanently remved frm NEHS (depending n the vilatin level). All members must keep behavir apprpriate at all times; this includes all inside and utside Dawsn High Schl activities. Must have 10 vlunteer hurs (5 inside and 5 utside) per semester AND cmplete 2 required service prjects per year. Inside hurs must be English related. FreeRice.cm des NOT cunt fr inside r utside hurs. Extra hurs beynd the 5 inside and 5 utside required per semester may cunt tward excess hurs but d nt rll ver t the next semester s requirement. Article IV, Sectin 3 The guidelines fr the electin f fficers shall be as fllws: Must have met all the requirements as a member and have never been given a prbatin letter. Must have been in the sciety fr at least ne year.

3 Officers fr the fllwing year will be elected thrugh an applicatin (and pssibly interview) prcess at the end f each year. Current fficers, chapter advisr and academic teachers determine wh will be fficers fr the fllwing schl year. If a tie shuld ccur, then NEHS members will vte n a particular fficer/psitin t settle the tie. Officers may hld the same psitin fr mre than ne term. In evaluating ptential fficer psitins, the Eagle Chapter lks fr leadership, invlvement, cntributin, service, and character. The invlvement and cntributin criterin is measured as highly imprtant fr fficer selectin and shuld be shwn t a greater extent than the rest f the Eagle Chapter members. Article IV, Sectin 4 Any member wh fails t meet the Eagle Chapter s requirements OR vilates any rules f Glenda Dawsn High Schl and/r Pearland ISD guidelines shall be dismissed frm NEHS membership. This may include: lying t NEHS Spnsr r NEHS Officer(s), frging signatures n NEHS dcuments (i.e., hur sheets, etc.), ther frms f dishnesty (i.e., cheating, plagiarism and lying based n the Dawsn Student Cde f Cnduct Handbk), attendance issues. The prcedure fr remval f a member fr attendance issues, nt fulfilling required service hurs, r nt fulfilling required service prjects shall be as fllws: A prbatin letter shall be sent via and/r typed, dcumented letter t the member stating the specific duties nt fulfilled. Once an electrnic ntificatin r letter is received, the member has five schl days t rectify the situatin with the chapter advisr, president, and vice president. Shuld the member facing prbatin be the president r vice president, then the secretary will stand in as ne f thse representing fficers. If the situatin is still nt rectified, then a final meeting will be held with the chapter advisr, assciate principal, and/r principal f Glenda Dawsn High Schl. A final letter r will be sent/given regarding the membership decisin. The prcedure fr remval f an fficer shall be as fllws: Any fficer wh fails t meet this sciety s requirements and des nt fulfill his/her duties as an fficer r vilates any rules f Glenda Dawsn High Schl shall be dismissed frm NEHS membership r dismissed frm his/her fficer psitin. If an fficer is remved frm an fficer psitin, they can pssibly remain a NEHS member, depending n the severity f the circumstances invlved and if it is nt in further vilatin f ther NEHS penalties. A meeting will be held with the chapter advisr and the advisry cuncil. The fficer will be presented with all the evidence and facts used t establish fficer remval criteria. The fficer will be allwed t state their case, and then a vte will be carried ut t determine fficer remval r cmplete expulsin frm NEHS. The prcedure fr remval f a member r fficer fr ther severe vilatins (academic dishnesty, cheating, plagiarism, inapprpriate cnduct) shall be as fllws: Once a letter r electrnic ntificatin is received, the member has five schl days t rectify the situatin with the chapter advisr, president, and vice president. Shuld ne f the members include the president r vice president, then the secretary will stand in as ne f thse representing fficers.

4 If the situatin is still nt rectified, then a final meeting will be held with the chapter advisr and advisry cuncil. A final letter r will be given regarding the membership decisin. Article IV, Sectin 5 Being put n prbatin fr the first time is tentative dismissal frm NEHS. Fr members, prbatin will cause membership t be reviewed, and a ntificatin will be given within five schl days. Fr fficers, prbatin will cause fficer and membership psitin t be reviewed, based n fficer expectatins and bligatins shwn as an fficer and a member. Ntificatin will be given within five schl days. Being put n prbatin fr the secnd time is autmatic dismissal frm NEHS. Depending n the circumstances f the dismissal, a member may r may nt be reinstated int the sciety again. Article VI, Sectin 1 There are times when an utdated set f Bylaws becmes a real hindrance t the chapter, giving gd reasn t amend the Bylaws. Therefre, it is the duty f the fficers t amend the Bylaws as necessary, with the apprval f the Chapter Advisr. Article VI, Sectin 2 The guidelines fr required service prjects shall be as fllws: Service prjects will NOT cunt twards members required hurs. There are tw exceptins t this rule: If a member verstays the 30 minutes required in rder t receive credit fr their Required Service Prject, their extra time may be cunted twards inside hurs. If a member has already cmpleted their tw required service prjects, participating in additinal service prjects may be cunted twards inside hurs. Ptential service prjects may include, but are nt limited t: Flck Party, fundraisers, Adpt-a-Family/family in need, NEHS Inductin Ceremny, and DHS v. PHS ftball game banner painting. If a member fails t cmplete the tw required service prjects per year, they will be issued a prbatin ntice. Several service prjects will be made available thrughut the year, as listed abve, but there is a limited number f spts available fr each prject. If a member is missing a required service prject, they shuld: sign up early t ensure a spt r talk t the Chapter Advisr and/r fficers t see what can be dne t rectify lack f service prject participatin. Article VI, Sectin 3 The guidelines fr gift card dnatins shall be as fllws: Sme service prjects, such as Adpt-a-Family, may include the dnatin f gift cards. Depending n the mnetary amunt, gift cards may cunt as a required service prject and/r inside hurs. $5 = 0.25 inside hur (n service prject credit) $10 = 1 service prject $15 = 1 service prject inside hur $20 = 1 service prject + 1 inside hur

5 $25 = 1 service prject inside hurs $30 = 1 service prject + 2 inside hurs If a member has already cmpleted their tw required service prjects, then the dnatin f gift cards fr service prjects, such as Adpt-a-Family, may cunt entirely twards inside hurs. $5 = 0.25 inside hur $10 = 1 inside hur $15 = 1.5 inside hurs $20 = 2 inside hurs $25 = 2.5 inside hurs $30 = 3 inside hurs Article VI, Sectin 4 Requirements t receive duble hnr graduatin crds (purple and yellw crds with tassels) shall be as fllws: 1. Cmpleted the required number f inside/utside hurs per year. Sphmre Year: 20 hurs (10 inside/10 utside) Junir Year: 20 hurs (10 inside/10 utside) Senir Year: 20 hurs (10 inside/10 utside) = 60 ttal NEHS hurs cmpleted t receive crds If a member jins NEHS in their junir r senir year, they are still required t cmplete a ttal f 60 hurs in rder t receive tw crds OR a ttal f 30 hurs fr ne crd. Hwever, there are exceptins fr receiving ne crd; members shuld speak t the Chapter Advisr fr mre details. 2. Never have been put n prbatin as a member. 3. Fulfilled all membership requirements as stated in the Bylaws. Article VI, Sectin 5 The guidelines fr cmmunicatins shall be as fllws: Remind and will be the main methds f cmmunicatin.
