1 Marietta High School Project Based Instruction Shirley Flack Course Projects for Financial Literacy Project Number Project #1 Project Title Beware and Be Wise Project Description Students will design a poster or a presentation using an electronic format. The project is to inform teens about the longterm effects of student loan debt and to persuade them to avoid financing their college education altogether. Students should be creative and may combine text, music, pictures and video to create a dynamic product to share. Students should research online to find examples of how student loan debt has impacted the lives of former college students. They are also to provide an opposing claim regarding student loans and insert a graph Your product must: 1. Provide a challenge to an opposing claim regarding student loans. 2. Insert a graph on the topic of student loan debt with explanation. 3. Include sources of information. The objective of the product is to grab your peer s attention and clearly express the dangers of student loan debt. Project #2 EverFi Modules Project Students will complete nine modules on Financial Literacy topics: Savings, Banking, Payment Types, Credit Scores, Higher Education, Renting vs. Owning, Insurance & Taxes, Consumer Protection, and Investing. After successfully completing each module with a grade of 70% or higher, students will receive certification in Financial Literacy through EverFi, Inc.

Flack Stage 1 Desired Results Common Core Georgia Performance Standard: FIN-FL-1: Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry. FIN-FL-2: Identify various forms of income and analyze and evaluate factors that affect income as a part of the career decision-making process. FIN-FL-6: Analyze factors that affect the choice of credit, the cost of credit, and the legal aspects of using credit. FIN-FL-10: Evaluate various consumer loan options and analyze factors that affect lending decisions. Big Idea: After high school, a world of unending opportunities are available. These choices will greatly affect students financial health after college. Credit cards and student loans might seem like a tempting solution when money is tight, but students must be prepared to escape these financial risks by having a plan. Enduring Understanding(s) Student Objectives (outcomes): Understand the long-term impact of student loans. Inquiry Statement: Heaping up student loans all through your college career is like keeping a monster locked in your closet. Background: Ask students what education and career plans they have for after graduation from high school. Stage 2 Evidence Performance Tasks: -Measure Your Progress -Wise People Invest in Themselves -Beware: The Student Loan Myth Informal: -Diagnostic Assessment -Journal Writing -Discussions -Observations Formal: Product Rubric Stage 3 Learning Plan & Resources
4 Students will: Day 1: Dave Ramsey s Video Clips and Foundations in Personal Finance Booklet - Preview the learning outcomes and key terms. - Have students do a pre-assessment activity. - Oral reading, questions, discussion, and journal reflection. - Dave Ramsey video clips and note-taking. Beware and Be Wise: Students will design a poster board or electronic presentation to inform teens about the long-term effects of student loan debt. (Modified assignment: students will draw an illustration or analogy showing a picture representation of a student loan monster. Piling up student loans throughout one s college career is like keeping a monster locked in your closet). Day 2: Create poster, electronic format, or drawing. Day 3: Present product to the class Resources: Differentiated Instruction Plan: Guides for note-taking. Develop activities that lead to a variety of perspectives. Alternative to poster, and electronic format is an illustrative drawing using an analogy. Visual Learners Electronic or hard written copy, Dave Ramsey video clips, and the option to add color, text, and video to the end product. Auditory Learners Verbal discussions, Dave Ramsey audio clips, and the option to add sound or music to the end product. Kinesthetic Learners Discussions and hands on electronic poster/poster board poster board/ drawing. Encourage equitable participation of each student.

18 Alternatives to College/Paying for College Tradesman and Vocational School Military Get An Entry Level Job Entrepreneurship It Hits You Fast After graduating from college: You have 6-9 before entering the danger zone (payment on your student loan debt) Obviously, not enough time to establish a job. Not enough time get money saved up. Lets face it, you ve been spending more than saving.
19 A Job is Not Promised after College Graduation Some employability skills companies want: Problem-solving Communications Critical Thinking Companies want work experience in the field. No job= no way to pay college loan debt. But College is a Good Investment! Yes, college is a great investment. There are ways to stay out of debt. Thousands of people go into college on free money. Then realize the definition of free is not clear cut. A college degree looks great on your resume. But your job may not cover the cost. Ways to Stay Out of Debt The television that you want can wait. Do your research Before you make a big investment ask yourself: Can I afford those payments? How long will I be making these payments? Will this investment benefit me in the long run?
