LDC empowers educators to effectively teach reading writing, speaking, and listening in any subject.
Reading. Writing. Listening. Speaking. LITERACY. IT S THE FOUNDATION NECESSARY FOR NEARLY EVERY TYPE OF LEARNING ACROSS ALL DISCIPLINES. Every day, every US student has an opportunity to grow as a reader, a writer, a listener, and a speaker. And every day, every teacher has the opportunity to accelerate that growth. At LDC, we understand that effective literacy instruction is vital. Literacy isn t a trend, and should never be an afterthought. It should be intentional integrated in an explicit way into every lesson, every curriculum, and nearly every educational goal we have for students in every discipline. We re here to do just that. LDC provides teachers with structured but flexible tools that can be used again and again, with any program, practice or curriculum, to drive student growth.
LDC is a Sustainable Investment in Teachers and Teaching. For many teachers, professional development is a revolving door of programs and philosophies that only sometimes address the realities of day-to-day teaching. LDC is different. LDC s backwards design approach to creating instruction driven by standards can be applied to a lifetime of teaching approaches. Whether your district s focus is project-based learning, differentiated instruction, or another way of organizing and impacting student achievement, LDC s flexible tools and resources can support and augment what teachers do every day. LDC & BACKWARDS DESIGN Not only does LDC take backwards design from the conceptual to the practical, it provides a peer-review quality process that connects teacher work to student skills to results. LDC & STANDARDS IMPLEMENTATION LDC offers a common-sense approach to standards implementation. We know that districts and teachers face a grab-bag of so-called aligned off-the-shelf curricula that can result in a scramble to patch gaps. LDC s approach helps schools align literacy and content focus standards with concrete skills and instructional plans to achieve results. LDC & FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT LDC s lessons use clear, direct language to make goals and expectations transparent to students. Each lesson includes a prompt, a student work product, and scoring-guide scoring guides include the rubrics and checklists teachers use to assess and adjust instruction. LDC & COMMON ASSIGNMENT Developing and implementing assignments that address common standards, skills, or content across schools, departments, or classrooms can create opportunities for sharing expertise, coordinating planning and scoring activities, and analyzing student work to generate system-wide impact. LDC facilitates this through an instructional design process that supports the creation of rigorous common lessons and units at the individual teacher, grade, and system levels. LDC & PROJECT BASED LEARNING LDC increases the rigor of PBL without compromising authenticity. By incorporating LDC tasks within a PBL unit, teachers lead students to read complex texts appropriate to the task at hand, create authentic disciplinary products, and develop enduring, real-world skills while completing projects aligned to career- and college-ready standards and assessments.
LDC in the Classroom LDC works at three levels. First, it supports teachers in improving the quality of instruction and in developing key teacher skills and competencies. Second, LDC fills gaps and synthesizes across lessons and units at the curriculum or practice level. Finally, it works at the system level to drive alignment across curriculum, assessment, and practice. 1 LDC IMPROVES INSTRUCTION LDC supports teachers in cycles of planning, implementing, and assessing high-leverage literacy lessons in any discipline. These lessons and content then scaffold to more rigorous multi-day assignments driven by college-ready standards. 10TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER SARA BALLUTE LEADS HER CLASS THROUGH A THREE-WEEK MODULE ON THE BRITISH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. Watch Sara s class in action: youtube.com/watch?v=qrv9hv7fsjs British Industrial Revolution and CCR Standards R3, R6, and W2 3 LDC ALIGNS INITIATIVES LDC supports the creation and implementation of cross-classroom common assessments in a scalable way across grades and subjects, paced by district need. 2 LDC BOOSTS RIGOR & QUALITY LDC raises the quality of assignments by engaging teachers in unit design and implementation using a curriculum rubric. Students engage in analyzing and reflecting on their own work. LDC helps put the rigor and intent of the standards into action. SARA COLLABORATES WITH A COLLEAGUE TO DISCUSS STUDENT PROGRESS AND INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACHES AS THEY BOTH TEACH THE ASSIGNMENT IN THEIR CLASSES. OVER THE COURSE OF THREE WEEKS, SARA S STUDENTS COMPLETE A SERIES OF MINI-TASKS, EACH FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING AND EXECUTING A SPECIFIC SKILL. HERE A SMALL GROUP CREATES A COST-BENEFIT CHART WHICH WILL LATER FORM THE BASIS OF THEIR ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY.
1 Free Online Lesson Builder Teachers can search for high-quality, literacy-rich course material by grade, subject, standard, and more. 2 Flexible Lesson Templates Our task templates are flexible and pre-populated with standards-aligned content. Teachers can modify and use as needed. 3 Vetted Teacher-Created Lessons LDC mini-tasks are short lessons designed to enact specific standards, and bolster larger multi-day lessons and units. Each mini-task outlines the standard and skills addressed, the student prompt, instructional strategies, and includes associated handouts and scoring guides. Which dyes allow us to most efficiently harvest energy from the sun using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs)? After reading the request for proposals (RFP), conducting background research on DSSCs, and designing and testing dyes for DSSCs, write a critical design report in which you describe your design and argue its effectiveness in meeting the requirements of the RFP. Support your response with evidence from your research. Include data tables to help convey your message to your readers. How Do Teachers Use LDC? LDC supports teachers in improving their practice through a backwards design approach to instructional planning. From online lesson building to in-person and virtual professional development and coaching, we provide teachers with templates and tools they can use to raise the quality of their instruction to yield superb student work again and again. 4 High-Quality Assignments As teachers work through our process, they develop and refine the 20 LDC Teacher Competencies from aligning assignments to standards or learning goals, designing quality assignments and instructional plans, and assessing outcomes through iterative cycles of design and peer review. 5 Structured Teacher Collaboration We believe that giving teachers the support they need is key. LDC provides in-person and virtual coaching, professional development courses, a network of like-minded educators, and a model for successful collaboration. 6 High-Quality Student Work As a result of all of our tools and techniques, the quality of student work products is dramatically increased. Students truly understand the task at hand, and the process for crafting effective writing in any subject.
You get to understand the process and how to write a good essay. You know the steps to follow and you know if you re on the right track. Alison Fletcher Teacher I m really learning to break things down more, and analyze where my students are in every step along the way to get to the depth of each of those standards. LDC offers an exceptional collection of practical and proven tools, templates and instructional procedures to promote deep and authentic learning. I wholeheartedly recommend LDC to teachers, schools, and districts. Ella Johnson 10th grade student LDC has given us the clear steps we need to take to get our students to reach the next level. It relies on collaboration which is what we embrace at STEM: true collaboration, true teamwork, true innovation. It s shifted the culture at our school. Jay McTighe co-author, Understanding by Design Ronnda D. Cargile School Administrator
Bring the Power of COURSES LDC s online courses build specific teacher competencies. Implementations can be customized for a school s goals and needs. LDC to Your School. CONTENT Teachers can get started right away by accessing LDC templates and lessons online, and teaching them in their classrooms to see immediate results. LDC was founded in 2009 to enact the literacy demands incorporated in the College and Career Readiness Standards. LDC s quality systems peer review processes, curriculum alignment rubric, and student work rubrics were designed by SCALE and P. David Pearson, and are endorsed by UbD s Jay McTighe. COACHING LDC's partners provide coaching that develops professional practices for planning and instructional effectiveness. LDC s offerings can be delivered to schools around the country via a series of partnerships with leading providers of school improvement services and professional development.
