Each year, APCU hosts a scholarship competition for members who are high school seniors looking to further their education by attending a college, university, or technical school. We received many outstanding entries this year. After much discussion and deliberation, our Scholarship Review Panel has selected the winners of the 2018 Youth Development Scholarship Competition. You deposited $50 and will begin earning a dividend every quarter. Great! You put the account on the back burner and haven t made another deposit. You are earning dividends the whole time so that keeps the account active, right Most people aren t aware that if you don t perform a transaction (deposit or withdrawal) using your account for too long, the account is considered inactive. Under the Unclaimed Property law, just letting your account sit with no activity for five years puts you at risk of having your state claim your funds in the inactive account. Really! Your money could become property of your state and go into the state s General Fund. As an account approaches dormant status, the credit union makes every effort to contact the account owner to encourage reactivation of the account by making a deposit or withdrawal. If a transaction is not performed before the end of the five year period, a dormant fee is charged to the account and any remaining funds are turned over to the state of account record, commonly referred to as Escheat. Where Did My Money Go Depositing into an account periodically will prevent a dormant status. Here are a couple of suggestions: $ Pay yourself first! When you sit down to pay your bills, include yourself by making a deposit to your savings account. $ Set up a direct deposit from your paycheck and watch you savings grow. $ Make saving effort-free with an automatic transfer to your APCU account from your account at another financial institution. $ Tell us when your contact information changes. Do you have a new address, phone number, cell number, address, employment, etc. Having your most current information will allow us to let you know if your account is in jeopardy of being escheated to the state. $ To help prevent your account from reaching a dormant status, review your account statement on a regular basis. Take action! Although the money from a dormant account that is turned over to the state is not lost forever, it can be a tedious process to obtain the funds from the state. It is far easier to begin periodically depositing into your APCU account. 4 APCU s Don DeCinque Awarded the 2017 Moses C. Davis Lifetime Achievement Award! Atlanta Postal Credit Union (APCU) is pleased to announce Don DeCinque has been awarded the prestigious 2017 Moses C. Davis Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Credit Union League. Mr. DeCinque began his career with APCU in He has served in a variety of positions, including President and CEO from 2001 until retiring in Earlier this year, he was named Chairman of APCU s Board of Directors. Mr. DeCinque is known as a hard-working, dedicated advocate for credit unions. He has been actively reviewing and suggesting changes to state credit union acts, bylaws, and rules to ensure Georgia credit unions are ready to grow in the future. We congratulate Mr. DeCinque on this achievement. He is a valuable asset to our organization as well as the credit union movement. It s Report Card Bonus time!
