1 SET-PLAN IMPLEMENTATION The Steering Group of the SET-Plan in its last meeting on October 28 th, 2010 agreed to speed-up the execution of activities of the Implementation Plans (IPs) of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It was decided to collectively identify the possibilities for launching joint actions between Member States and/or Member States and the European Commission. The mapping exercise carried out through this questionnaire builds upon this decision of the Steering Group. It aims to identify topics for leveraging best ongoing efforts with complementary joint actions, as prioritized by the Implementation Plans. In this phase the mapping will focus on projects and activities with a total budget higher than 1 M. We trust that you also consider the success of this exercise important for the immediate implementation of the SET-Plan. MAPPING OF PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS To which EII(s) is your project, activity, resource or investment relevant? (multiple choices are possible) WIND SOLAR GRIDS CCS NUCLEAR BIOENERGY A. PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES GENERAL INFORMATION Name of project: LImeStone based Absorption of CO 2 Acronym: Give project acronym, if applicable Location: Applicable only for demo/pilot project; enter specific location(s) and Member State(s) Project partners: List project partners; name coordinator first. For European & international projects mention the country affiliation of each partner LISA Planned next step: Pilot at GKM (Grosskraftwerke Mannheim) in Mannheim/Germany EST TU Darmstadt; Prof. Epple (coordinator) GKM (Grosskraftwerke Mannheim) FISIA-Babcock Environment GmbH (E-on, Alstom, RWE, Rheinkalk, Linde, Hitachi) Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 1 of 5
2 Project website: Contact details: Name, affiliation and contact details of the project coordinator Start date: mm-yyyy Duration: in months (6151) Prof. Bernhard Epple (will probably be extended) SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Provide a short abstract of max. 100 words Within the LISA (limestone based absorption of CO2) project a so called Carbonate Looping process (CL-P) will be investigated in a 1 MWth test facility. The CL-P can be used to retrofit existing fossil or biomass fired powerplants for sequestration of CO2 from the flue gas. In CL-P lime (CaO) reacts with CO2 from the flue gas in a fluidized bed reactor (Carbonator) producing limestone (CaCO3). CO2-free flue gas is released into the environment. In the second reactor (Calciner) the limestone is calcined and thereby CO2 is released. The newly formed lime is lead back into the first reactor and consequently the loop is closed. The efficiency loss is approximately 6%-points. (including CO2 compression) PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES Goals: Indicate main qualitative goals Minimize the efficiency loss for CO2 sequestration Objectives: Indicate quantitative objectives (similar to KPIs of the IPs of the EIIs). Also indicate intermediate milestones where applicable. Minimize the efficiency loss to 6% PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECT Assumed state-of-the-art: Describe quantitatively the state-of-the-art that the project objectives are based upon Post combustion capture with amine-based liquids (efficiency loss ca 10%) Achievements so far: If intermediate results are available, please indicate the current achievements (qualitative and/or quantitative) Test facility is nearly completed; first tests showed promising results Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 2 of 5
3 Difficulties and potential risks: Indicate briefly problems encountered or to be encountered in the short term (e. g. overall legislative context, public acceptance, permitting, etc.) Pending legal decisions in Germany, public acceptance of CCS, Limestone degradation, Storage/Usage of exhausted limestone/cao FUNDING & BUDGET Funding programme: Give the name of funding programme Funding public entity: Indicate which public entity is in charge of /manages the programme Total (public & private) project budget ( ): 5.Energieforschungsprogramm (COORETEC-Initiative) BMWi German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Ca. 4.5 M Public funding ( ): Ca. 3.0 M Total effort (person-months) n.a. DISSEMINATION OF PROJECT RESULTS Publications, presentations in conferences and workshops, and other dissemination means: Give highlights only Presentation during the Inauguration Ceremony for the CO 2 Test Facility with remarkable echo in newspaper (FAZ, Frankfurter Rundschau) and on TV (SAT 1 report) Presentation on the first International Conference on Chemical Looping in Lyon (F) 2010 Prof. Epple will be organizer of the 2 nd International Conference on Chemical Looping in October 2012 TOWARDS COMMERCIALISATION Indicate (new) products and/or services expected from the project. Are new business models required for commercialisation of the project results? Highlight expected commercialisation benefits, e.g. patents, spin-offs, new products, business partnerships Retrofit CCS technique with minimal efficiency loss, patents, new CaCO3 market, possibly new CaO/CaCO3 with new quality characteristics SYNERGIES WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION PLANS OF THE EUROPEAN Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 3 of 5
4 INDUSTRIAL INITIATIVES NETWORKING KNOWLEDGE SHARING Contribution to/relevance with the IPs: To your opinion, to which activities of the IPs of the EIIs is this project related to? Indicate contributions / complements. Please note that reference here is made to the activities of the IPs as published in activities/implementation-plans CCS European Industrial Initiative Implementation Plan Post combustion with Carbonate Looping Potential synergies with other projects and activities: Can you identify any other project(s) in your country, another MS or at European level that could be synergetic with this project? Every project that handles with Chemical and/or Carbonate Looping (for example the European Project: ÉCLAIR or the german CLOCK Networking: Would you be willing to share results with the projects identified above? Indicate willingness to networking and also potential conditions Can not be answered by PtJ Knowledge sharing: Would the abovementioned Networking necessitate a formal knowledge sharing agreement? To your view would this be the preferred route? Can not be answered by PtJ Future steps: Are there any follow-up activities considered after the completion of your project? Is there a need to scale up activities in this topic at European level? Building of a 20MWth Demo facility RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS B. RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS Describe in short any RD&D infrastructures that your project relies on. Are these available or do they need to be developed? All technical RD&D infrastructures are available, but not the legal ones If these are to be developed, what is the corresponding investment required? What is the allocated budget ( ) for this investment in your project? Can not be answered OTHER INFORMATION Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 4 of 5
