8 WELCOME TO SHARJAH CULTURAL CAPITAL OF THE ARAB WORLD Occupying an area of 2,590 km², Sharjah is the third largest Emirate in the UAE, located 10 kilometers from Dubai and an hour from Abu Dhabi. Home to the largest number of educational institutes in the country and possessing vibrant communities and a rich heritage, (UNESCO declared Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998 and World Book Capital for 2019.) Sharjah overlooks the Arabian Gulf to the west and the Gulf of Oman to the east, giving it a unique geographical perspective. Featuring a fusion of the old and the new, the emirate is awash with magnificent mosques, wonderful waterfront hotels, and selection of souks. Sharjah is also renowned for its historical beauty, boasting a number of museums in which to start a journey of discovery into its rich and colorful past. Advantages in Trade and Commerce The Emirate of Sharjah is a prominent center for trade both domestically and internationally. In the UAE, it serves as a gateway to the Northern Emirates, while globally it enjoys a strategic location between Europe and the Far East, providing access to key emerging markets, including India, Iran, Iraq and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. During the past decade, diversification of industries has ensured Sharjah is now a safe haven for investment. The only economy in the Middle East with no single sector contributing to more than one fifth of GDP, it contributes an impressive 48% to the country s industrial output. Retail, wholesale, property, transport, communication and tourism are major contributors to the UAE economy, which grew by almost 20% from 2013 to 2015 to $403 billion, second only to Saudi Arabia in the GCC. Indeed, Sharjah is the eleventh most attractive destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the world. 8
