1 2017 Retail Sales Manager Survey Results - Comments Random Lengths issue of April 28, 2017 Do you expect the anticipated countervailing and anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber exports to the U.S. to impact your income in 2017? How would a hard cap quota affect you? Midwest I am not sure. Will not affect my income. I do not expect the duties to impact my income at all. I would have to place more emphasis on the needs of the product instead of price and margins. Stay the same. No impact. Our demand remains regardless of price. Not really. Typically when the market goes on a long run our profits increase. Of course if the market crashes mid summer we will have a lot of high priced inventory to unload reducing profits. A hard cap would be bad, there just isn't enough lumber available from within the United States to cover everyone's needs. We are in the northern United States, lumber out of eastern Canada gives us a price advantage due to the lower freight, if we have to buy more from the South it becomes a freight disadvantage for us. I do, but I don't know how or how much. Margin will get squeezed at first while honoring bids and price locks. Once we adjust the margin percentage may drop but margin dollars should increase on higher dollar sales volume. Yes. How would a hard cap quota affect No Shouldn't affect much. Do not think the duties or quota will affect our sales. I don't think it will. Yes. Northeast No it will not impact income and no we do not support a hard cap quota - it is unrealistic. South Positive impact. 5% of $500 is more than 5% of $250. We want everything to be $1000/m. We just don't want to be the first to buy it. Or the last to hold it... Expect very little if any to affect business. Yes. West We will definitely enjoy a windfall of added margins on Cedar products until new inventory prices fully average in. We planned way ahead and aren't ruled by our CFO so are able to capitalize when situations like this arise. It will affect my income if sales drop due to pricing, Cedar in particular. A hard cap would limit the amount of material that would be available for purchase and to resell from Canada. Our only Canadian lumber is W.R.Cedar. Duties may impact the quantity we sell. How would a hard cap quota affect Expect sales to increase as we absorb higher raw costs. It will increase margin dollars. Cost up not sure retails will fllow. Western Canada Yes. Hard cap would significantly reduce lumber costs, hurt our bottom line and our top line. A short to medium term increase in price volatility will general increase profitability (if managed correctly). However the longer term reduction of competition, resulting form smaller producers being absorbed by large producers with a greater North American manufacturing base, will likely stabilize the market. 4 Midwest What impact, if any, do you expect the Donald Trump administration to have on your compensation this year? What impact, if any, do you expect the Donald Trump administration to have on your compensation this year? I expect the success of my company will be greater under Trump's leadership of the USA, assuming he is successful in cutting personal income tax rates, corporate tax rates, and regulations. No impact at all. Very little, if any. Increase because of anticipated tax savings. None this year but next year maybe due to insurance rates and minimum wages effecting staffing and overhead. Very little in the first year. I'm optimistic that his administration will improve the economy in general leading to creation of sustainable jobs and improved consumer confidence. This in turn, would lead to an increase in home spending on renovations and new construction. However, I don't anticipate seeing these results in a meaningful way for another year or two. From what I can see so far he's going to be putting a lot of people back to work, with all the new factory jobs being created I think that it's going to be much harder to find and hire construction workers. The new jobs will drive more construction which is good for lumber dealers. Hopefully, I will have more choices on how it is distributed. It depends if his stance softens on immigration and trade barriers. The industry needs laborers and we need to be able to do business with areas that are more efficient than ours in producing wood. Well if they lower the income tax rate, as Trump promised, then I'll have more net income. Just as aside note, not only can I not intelligently answer questions 31 and 32, I'm not so sure I even understand them. No inpact. Won't change. Northeast none but if he gets done what he wants it should help in the long run. South Positive. See above. Hope much better. Will not affect. We're just getting into Trump admistration, but January sales, GP,NP were up double digits from February sales, GP, NP, are up well into double digits so far from We're quoting more single family new construction than in at least 8 years. Commercial construction is very robust in our area. The future looks really encouraging. We think President Trump is going to be great for the economy. So, we should increase profit greatly, compensation should go up. Will increase it. Increase. West It won't change my income. I'm optimistic that it will lower my tax burden though. Less taxes = Raise. Up - with lower taxes. If he shows he can stabilize the market and economy, I think my compensation will be equal or better than last year. If there continues to be unrest and mass dissatisfaction, I think there will be a direct correlation to weaker spending and sales and therefore, less personal With tax reform there should be more money for bonuses. Trump bump not impacting us yet? Western Canada Uncertain. The administration change has been greatly over blown by elements in the media. I expect very little change in the first or second year.
