Several months ago, members volunteered to organize meeting programs for Our March 2015 meeting program will be arranged by Steve Beach. As a reminder, the schedule for subsequent months is as follows: April May June July August September October Connie Socash Haiko Eichler (Need volunteer) (Need Volunteer) (Need Volunteer) Chapter Picnic Bill and Mary Mitchell 4
November December (Need Volunteer) Chapter Christmas Party If you aren t on the list already, please step up and take one of the months needing a volunteer to arrange the program. March Program: Our March meeting on Monday, March 9 th will be held in JD Gleitz and Al Manley's hangar, on the South side of the Longmont airport. There will be a demonstration and talk on various welding techniques and technologies. The meeting WILL NOT be at our regular meeting location. Steve Beach has provided the following information on the program and directions to the hangar at Longmont where we will meet. Directions To Chapter 648 March meeting: The meeting will take place at JD Gleitz and Al Manley's hangar on the South side of the Longmont Airport. Take Airport Road to Rogers Road and go West. The Emissions Station is on the Northwest corner of Airport and Rogers. Follow Rogers Road around to the new gate that goes through the fence. Go through the gate into the airport. Combination is 'Squawk VFR' (1200). The hangar is on the last row on the West. Park on the West side of the hangar row. Looking forward to seeing everyone for the welding demonstration. If you have something that you are having welding problems with bring it along and the instructor, Bill Anthony, will probably be able to help. We are a little short of welding helmets so if you have one please bring it along. Call me with any questions, Steve Beach photo map on following page... 5
As always, everyone is invited to bring a guest to our meetings. There is almost always an interesting program and fun for all. A Message from the President At our last meeting some points were raised on obligations and liabilities regarding Use Taxes, Sales Taxes, and Property Taxes for builders and owners of airplanes in Colorado. One is sometimes tempted to ignore an unpleasant subject and perhaps it will go away. In this case, I think it wise to get the facts and know exactly what are our individual rights, responsibilities and obligations concerning these matters. I am asking the membership to suggest who we might call upon to give us a clear and complete understanding of these matters. Remember the old adage, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dick Socash President, EAA Chapter 648 6
From the Editor: During February, I was sent a document by a subscriber to our newsletter regarding sales and use tax on aircraft in Colorado. The subscriber didn't want to 'present' the data at a meeting, but thought it would make for some interesting discussion/reading. That document is appended to the end of this newsletter as it was sent to me. Please be advised that this document has not been verified or fact-checked. NEWSLETTER QUIZ Each month, we will ask a "question" in the newsletter. Answers are given at the meeting referenced in the newsletter. At the end of the year, there will be a prize to the person who has the most correct answers. Some will be easy and some difficult. February Question: A voltage sufficient to cause arcing is applied across two electrodes. What is the difference in behavior if the voltage is switched from plus to minus? February Answer: A spark jumping a gap will cause a minute amount of metal to vaporize at the destination electrode. The result is a microscopic pitting action which over time will erode a measurable amount of the electrode. When polarity is changed, the direction of current flow reverses. In a running airplane engine, half of the plugs are at one polarity and the other half at opposite polarity. This translates to half experiencing pitting on the outer electrode and the other half experiencing pitting on the inner electrode. Systematically switching plug positions when cleaning and re-gapping plugs distributes the erosion and prolongs plug life. March Question: A comment not to be forgotten and made by a 648 member said, Emergency survival gear is what you re wearing at the time of a forced landing, whereas anything else in the airplane is Camping Gear. Assuming you are forced down in the Colorado high country in June, and you are limited to four survival gear items, what would they be? NOTE: There is no one right answer and your opinion or selection is solicited. We will talk about this at one of our future meetings. February Program: Our February meeting on Monday, February 9 th was held in Dave Copp s hangar, 13A at the Longmont airport. If you recall from the meeting summary sent out earlier, Dave gave us a presentation on building a hangar at Longmont and dealing with the various compliance, permitting, regulatory, and "Red Tape agencies. Whatever happened to Government of, by, and for the people? The second part of the program was an excellent demonstration on drones, radio control technology and profile model airplane flying. Our guest presenters were Skip Miller, his wife, and son. For those old enough to remember control-line flying and McCoy-29 etc., this technology has progressed far 7
beyond our dreams in the 1950 s. One of the more interesting items in the demonstration was reversible-pitch on a model airplane propeller. Minutes from February 2015 Meeting: Guests: George Hayes and Skip Miller & Family New Business: Steve Beach has next month's topic---welding---at Alan Manley and JD Gleitz' hangar on the south side of the Longmont airport. Folks indicated they would appreciate info on Tig, Gas, and Electric styles of welding. Treasurer's report: Checking balance of $ , with a check for $340 going for chapter insurance and charter renewals, and a note that 2015 dues are due...$20/year Program topics and presenters are needed for months of June, July, August, and November. Tech Counselor report: Doug Sykes inspected Tracy Ross' Glassair Sportsman, noting good workmanship. Member projects: Tracy Ross advised his left wing is now closed up and is wiring avionics. Rick Hall states that he's working on avionics during the winter season. Old Business: None Dick Socash has had difficulty in contacting Bill Truax and asks if anyone knows how to contact Bill... Discussion on aircraft use and sales tax. See end of this newsletter on same subject... 8
AIRPLANE PICTURE OF THE MONTH (#17) Tracy Ross s Glasair Sportsman Thanks to Tracy, we have a Plane of the Month for our newsletter. He indicates, here are some photos of my Glasair Sportsman. I have been closing the wings and working on the panel. Just got my seats done today. If you recall, a few months ago we met at Steve Croft s home to see his plane which is the same model. We ll get a brief progress report on this project at our next meeting in March. ========================================================= To members, friends and aspiring authors. Get published! Send in Your Newsletter Items! DON T FORGET!!! We need to get submissions from the members to include in future newsletters. I m starting to run out of ideas and lies!! Let s hear from you!! Need Plane of the Month, trip reports, technical tips, hangar tales, beautiful planes, and aviation slanted fish stories. 9
Other Items of Interest Appended to the end of this newsletter are two articles; first being some data regarding sales and use tax on aircraft in Colorado, and second, an article reprinted from AOPA Magazine that speaks to the use of automotive spark plugs in Experimental aircraft, submitted by Haiko Eichler. From the New Editor: I will be working with a newer camera than the one that came with the editor's job, and appreciate everyone's understanding as I sort out the mechanical issues with this equipment. At some point, the ability to furnish captions with the photos will be available. 10
