14 Why do companies enter stock market? A Private company is normally stuck with funding from traditional source such as bank and individual investors. When they publicly list their companies on the stock market, it opens up new avenues. Companies will begin to expand at an exponential rate once they are publicly listed. 15 What is a share? A share is simply a divided unit of the value of the company. Every company issues a certain amount of shares at any given time. Shares can be broadly divided into two categories - equity and preference shares. Equity shares give their holders the power to share the earnings/profits in the company as well as a vote in the AGMs of the company. Such a shareholder has to share the profits and also bear the losses incurred by the company. Preference shares earn their holders only dividends, which are fixed, giving no voting rights. 15

17 Market s Indexes The two prominent Indian market indexes are Sensex and Nifty50. Sensex is the oldest market index for equities; It includes shares of 30 firms listed on the BSE, which represent about 45% of the index's free-float market capitalization. It was created in 1986 and provides time series data from April 1979 onwards. Another index is the Nifty50; it includes 50 shares listed on the NSE, which represent about 62% of its free-float market capitalization. It was created in 1996 and provides time series data from July 1990 onwards. 17

18 BSE ( Bombay Stock Exchange ) : It was established in 1875 and it is the 11th largest market in the world. It has companies listed Simple parameters or criteria is required to list a company on BSE For pros/experts, BSE is advisable. NSE ( National Stock Exchange ) : It was established in 1994 and its market capitalisation is $989Billion. It has companies listed. High parameters or criteria is required to list a company on NSE. Its fully operated online, hence, for beginners, it is advised to open Demat account thru any registered broker in this exchange. Market regulation The securities and exchange board of India(SEBI) is the regulator for the securities market in India. The responsibility of development and regulation of the stock market lies with it. 18
