3 Keller s Korner Dividend Options Vol. 30 Number 1 When a member tells me his insurance policy is paying for itself, what he is really telling me is the dividends are enough to pay for the policy s premium and the member chose to have the dividends pay the premium. As owner of a Knights of Columbus whole life policy the member has actually five dividend options: Cash A check is issued in the amount of the dividend to the owner on the anniversary of the policy Applied To Payment Of Premiums Dividend payment will be used to reduce or pay the entire premium due. (Scenario mentioned in my opening paragraph). Accumulate With Interest Interest is credited at the rate declared by the Order and does change from time to time. The interest earned is taxable each year. This option was very popular in the eighties when rates were very high. Purchase Paid Up Additional Insurance Additional insurance purchased is of the same type as the basic plan. Dividends are payable on the paid-up additional insurance. This is the most efficient way to use the dividends and this option is always applied on a new whole life policy. Reduce Existing Loans on the policy Dividends are not guaranteed and are determined by the Board of Directors annually. Should you have questions about dividends or want to change your dividend option on your Knights of Columbus policy please contact me. 4 Vol. 30 Number 1 Keller s Korner Fixed Annuities Recently a Brother Knight asked me, do the Knights have a simple, risk free, product that pays more than the banks? Where the member does not have to be concerned about the wild swings of the stock market or the meager.25% he is earning in his bank savings accounts. I responded absolutely Fixed Annuities! Knights of Columbus annuities are fixed which means that they will never go down in value. You will never lose principle or interest earned. They are not tied into the stock market (like variable annuities) which means the market s erratic behavior will not affect K of C annuities. Also, KofC annuities have a minimum rate and a current rate, which are higher than current bank savings rates. The rate will never be less than the contractual minimum rate on current and future deposits. However the current rate may increase as interest rates overall rise. And let s not forget the money in an annuity grows tax deferred. You do not pay income taxes until it is withdrawn. As in all annuities there are surrender fees, however there are exceptions. Knights of Columbus annuities can be set up as Traditional IRA s, Roth IRA s or as a non-qualified (not an IRA) account. Funds in existing IRA s, 401K s from previous employers, deferred compensation plans and other accounts can easily be moved to a Knights of Columbus annuity. If you are tired of the Wall Street swings and low bank interest rates call me and we ll get together to discuss the Knights of Columbus safe and secure fixed annuities! Alex Keller FICF alex.keller@kofc.org The Council once again is offering a $ Scholarship honoring our deceased members. It is based on the following criteria: Grade Point Average SAT Scores Council #8607 Membership in Good Standing (parent, grandparent or sibling) Athletics, Club, Student Activities and/or employment Community and Church involvement Applications are available at Sachem North or East or from our Grand Knight or Scholarship Chairman Phil Portanova PGK. The deadline is May 2nd. Page 4 College Scholarship
5 March, 2014 The Grand Knight s Message My Brother Knights, This month The Herald is returning with a new look and feel. I want to thank Bill Mueller for volunteering to take over the herald and for spending the time to redesigning it. On February 7th we had a very successful membership social, where we invited our members and anyone thinking about joining the Knights to a free pizza party. There was a decent turn out and along with our Membership Drive we picked up five new members. We are hosting a first degree on March 11th at 7:30 to bring some if these members into our council. While doing the membership drive, several of our current members said they would like to come to the meetings but have conflicts on the second Tuesday. So this month we are going to try meeting on the third Thursday (March 20th) to see if this would allow more of the council members to attend our regular meeting. I plan on trying it again if the turn out if good before making anything permanent. Recently there have been quite a few members who have needed the councils FAC program. This has drained our fund to zero, so it was decided that from now on 10% of every event s profits will automatically be put into the FAC fund. So please come out and support our events so we can get money back into this fund. The last thing I wanted to mention is that our 30th Anniversary Dinner is coming up soon. There is an advertisement in this herald with all of the details, I hope to see everyone there. Nick Hernandez Grand Knight Vol. 30 Number 1 Page 5
6 Vol. 30 Number 1 Past Grand Knight s Messages January, 2014 February, 2014 My Brother Knights, Once again it is that time of year, time to collect dues. This year we need more then just your thirty two dollars for dues, we need your help and participation. You may have noticed that you have not been receiving The Herald for the last couple of months. This is because our Financial Secretary has been ill and unable to put it together. We are working on getting The Herald out again but in the meantime we will be continuing to use our website: our Facebook page: and occasionally or phone calling system when we need to notify our members of important information. Overall this has been a rough year on the council, with our Financial Secretary becoming ill we have lost three of our very active members including the two most important positions in a council, Grand Knight and Financial Secretary. I am very concerned about the future of our council, unless we start getting additional active members. I am not sure how long this council will be able to continue resting on the shoulders of only a few of our members. I am asking that every member please consider coming to our meetings and joining us at our events. In January we are planning a big membership drive which we plan to follow up with a large social on Feb. 7th for our members and people who are considering joining our council and their families. My Brother Knights, It is amazing how much things can change in one month. I am really starting to feel like we are making progress in strengthening this council, but we still have some ways to go. Attendance has been up at our meetings and I have been seeing quite a few new faces at our meetings. This really has been wonderful to see and had been making it easier to get things done by being able to spread out the work. To continue moving us towards our goals we are going to be trying two new things over the next two months. The first thing is going to be on Friday February 7th, and will be a joint social with the Good Shepherd Women s Auxiliary. This social is meant as a fun night out for our members and as a way for people thinking about joining it get to know us. Current members, including inactive members, are encourage to come down with their families for a fun night of games and a pizza party. It should be a very fun evening. Recently there has been quite a few brothers who have said that they would like to be active members but have conflicts Tuesday nights. So in March we are going to try meeting on the third Thursday, March 2 0th, to see how many brothers can then attend. If it works out we will try it again in a different month and then consider make the change permanently. So please try to attend this special meeting so we can fudge interest in the change. We have a lot of great ideas for 2014 and with everyone s help I think we can make them all happen. Nick Hernandez Grand Knight Nick Hernandez Grand Knight Page 6
