2 Center of Excellence Mission The Center of Excellence, in partnership with business and industry, deliver regional workforce research customized for community college decision making and resource development.
3 Research Objectives Identify & survey the utilities/agencies in 6 Bay Area counties that hire workers in water and wastewater occupations. Identify the workforce needs & challenges of employers. Identify the projected job growth and replacement needs for seven mission critical occupations. Identify college programs related to these occupations. i

5 Defining Mission Critical Occupations Occupations were selected for study by BAYWORK if they met the following criteria: (1) their work is essential to reliable water and wastewater operations (2) there were concerns about whether sufficient numbers of qualified candidates would be available to fill upcoming vacancies.

7 Project Plan BAYWORK and COE developed survey tool. BAYWORK compiled database of utilities/agencies in target counties. Surveys sent out and follow up coordinated by BAYWORK. Sample data cleaned and analyzed by COE. Universe data calculated from sample by COE. BAYWORK and COE collaborate on final report.
8 Employer Survey 77 utilities/agencies identified as employing workers in one or more of the seven occupations in the target counties. Of these, 45 utilities/agencies completed the workforce survey. Online responses 47% (James McPherson developed using Zoomerang) Excel responses 53%
9 Water/Wastewater Department or Section Employment The 45 utilities/agencies who responded to the survey represent a combined workforce of more than 5,400 employees in water and/or wastewater t departments or sections.

11 Occupational Employment Data Combined, the seven occupations: Total 1,575 budgeted positions. Includes 4% or 64 budgeted positions that are currently vacant. Over the next 3 years employers estimate an increase in budgeted positions of 4% Over the next 5 years employers estimate an increase in budgeted positions of 5% Within 3 years, 32% of the current workforce is eligible to retire. Within 5 years, 40% of the current workforce is eligible to retire.
