2 Regional Learning & Skills Observatory Seasonal Report Summer 2011 Introduction Welcome to the Regional Learning & Skills Observatory s second seasonal report. This report is based on data contained within the RLSO, highlighting data within key themes and sectors where there are peaks both positive and negative. In addition to a broad and brief regional overview, we have aimed to provide a county by county breakdown against each of the key themes identified. Please note that we have only highlighted headline data within this report, to act as a catalyst for individuals to use the Observatory more fully, should they wish to look at and identify the contributory and comparative data that sits both beneath and alongside the headlines highlighted within this report. Background to the Regional Learning Partnership South West Wales The Regional Learning Partnership South West Wales (RLPSWW) is a transformational partnership bringing education and regeneration partners together to help provide a better future for learners and potential learners across the South West Wales region. Since forming in 2007, the RLP has been recognised by the Welsh Government for its transformational work with regeneration and education organisations across counties within the region. The partnership is made up of key representatives from local government, higher education, further education, the third sector and private sector / work based learning organisations. Each one has made a commitment to work collaboratively across the areas of education and regeneration in the South West Wales region. Its main aim is to ensure that publicly-funded learning providers and associated organisations work collaboratively, effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of the learners and the regional economy in South West Wales. The Regional Learning Partnership has 3 key pillars, one of which is the Regional Learning & Skills Observatory; The aim of the Regional Learning & Skills Observatory for South West Wales is to improve access to local data and intelligence for learning, skills, and the labour market, through a single website. The transparency of data within the interactive maps and tables is key to the continued use and effectiveness of the Observatory. As a means to primarily identify the trends in data relating to employment, learning and skills within the region, it serves as a powerful tool to assist greater understanding, and to provide opportunities for further collaboration. 2
