2 Training Begets Growth, and Growth Begets Training IT professionals gross annual salary increased in 2017, according to a new survey by Penton Technology, but anything less than wholehearted support for training in an age of digital transformation may slow not only employee but also company growth. Organization s primary business/industry Manufacturing 10% Transportation 4% Information Technology 9% Retailer/Distributer 3% Education 8% Professional Services 3% Healthcare 8% Nonprofit/Trade 3% Consulting 7% Insurance/Real Estate 3% Government 7% Manufacturing 2% Finance 6% Other 16% Software Develop/Design 6% Salary Boost for Some Respondents 2017 gross annual salaries averaged $85,000, with a median of about $102,000. The largest percentage of respondents 34%--reported a 2017 gross annual salary of $75,000 to $99,999, while 30% made between $100,000 and $124,000. The next highest percentage of respondents, 29%, reported a gross annual salary of $60,000 to $74,999, followed by 25% reporting a gross annual salary of less than $50,000. Only 7% of respondents earned a gross annual salary of between $200,000 and $299,999, and only 5% earned more than $300, salary change relative to 2016: 2017 Gross salaries 300k+ 5% k 7% k 10% k 13% k 30% k 34% 60-75k 29% 50-60k 13% under 50k 25% For 68% of respondents, their 2017 gross annual salary represents an increase from what they received in For some (7%) the increase was significant, while for far more others (51%) the increase was slight (from 1% to 4%). Ten percent of respondents said their salaries increased somewhat, from 5% to 9%. Nine percent of respondents actually saw a salary decrease this year gross annual salaries decreased slightly (by 1% to 4%) for 2% of respondents and somewhat (by 5% to 9%) for 3% of respondents. Four percent of respondents said they saw a significant decrease, of 10% or more. Twenty-three percent of respondents salaries remained the same in 2017, which could be why 37% of respondents said they were either likely or highly likely to seek new employment in the next year. On the flip side, 15% of respondents were highly unlikely to seek new employment in the next year, while 21% were unlikely to do so. Twenty-seven percent of respondents weren t sure either way. Salary increase Salary decrease 10%+ 5-9% 1-4% 0% 1-4% 5-9% 10%+ 7% 10% 2% 3% 4% 23% 51% Drivers for Salary Change Respondents were able to make multiple choices when it came to drivers for salary change. The top three drivers for salary increase were: Job performance (48%); Standard company increase (43%); Cost of living increase (26%). While job performance is a variable factor, the responses show that salary increases were also largely due to standard pay bumps. IT Professionals 2017 Salary Guide 2
3 Reasons for salary increase Job performance 48% New certification(s) 10% Standard increase 43% Promotion/new position 10% Cost of living increase 26% Changed companies 7% Additional responsibilities 20% Competitive pressures 5% New skill development 18% Other 5% Some respondents noted, however, that new skills and certification updates or additions had affected their salaries. For example, 18% of respondents attributed a 2017 salary increase to new skill development, while 10% named new certifications as a driver. Education and training activities that positively impact base salary 17% Significant impact Moderate impact Technical skills-related training 14% 21% 28% 29% Minimal imact No impact 26% Leadership development and management skills training 29% 36% When it came to salary decreases, a change in company (named by 50%) and adverse economic conditions (40%) were significant drivers. 13% 24% 30% Training for certification/recertification 33% Reasons for salary decrease: Changed companies 50% Took lower position 14% Company reduced size 46% Other 14% New employees 14% Fourteen percent of respondents said their salary decrease came about as a result of their companies hiring employees at lower salary levels, while another 14% said they took a lower-level position that resulted in a salary decrease. It s not clear whether the latter was due to a voluntary move, such as to maintain employment or gain new skills that might ensure future growth, or an involuntary move. Education and Training Are Key Of course, there are many factors that figure into a salary increase or decrease, but education and training clearly played a role for the respondents to this survey. Technical skills-related training made the biggest relative impact with 17% of respondents saying it had a significant effect on their base salaries and 28% saying such training had a moderate impact. Leadership development and management skills training were named by 14% of respondents as having a significant impact on base salary, and by 21% as having a moderate impact. Certification/recertification had a slightly less positive impact on base salary, according to respondents: 13% said it had a significant impact on base salary, while 24% said it had a moderate impact. 8% 22% 29% 41% Attending educational conference sessions Training Types Respondents participated in a variety of training areas in the past 12 months. The top five responses were: IT training (56%); Cloud (30%); IT operations training (27%); Leadership and professional skills (25%); Project management (18%). IT training could include a number of different disciplines, including security. If security is part of IT training, the top two Areas of training participation: Information Technology 56% Cloud 30% IT Operations 27% Leadership and Professional Skills 25% Project Management 18% Business Intelligence/Machine Learning 12% General Business 12% ITIL 10% Business Process Improvement 8% Data Center 7% Energy Efficiency 4% Facility Management 3% Other 6% None 20% IT Professionals 2017 Salary Guide 3
4 training responses correlate directly with the priority organizational focus areas named by respondents to the survey: IT security (32%) and cloud computing (29%). Cause for Certification A significant percentage of respondents 72%--said they had not renewed nor completed certifications in the past 12 months. However, for those who did, certifications made a difference. About a quarter of respondents each said that the certifications Certification completion/renewal (past 12 months): Completed 13% Renewed 6% Completed & Renewed 9% None 72% Positive impact of certifications: Significant impact Minimal imact Moderate impact No impact been deterred by lack of training budget. Eighteen percent said management did not support training because they did not see a tangible benefit from it. Training Support Of the IT pros are get getting paid to train, 68% said training is paid for from a corporate training budget or corporate general budget. However, more than one-third said they pay for training out of pocket. It makes sense, then, that more than half of respondents said they had participated in free online training in the last 18 months, and almost half said they had used how-to videos from YouTube and other sources. Training fees paid by: 14% 47% 21% 35% Training budget (47%) Personal funds (35%) General budget (21%) Other (2%) Do not attend (14%) 27% 42% 19% Opportunity for advancement outside organization 12% In order of popularity, the top five types of training that respondents participated in during the last 18 months were: 26% 37% Effectiveness in your current role 23% 24% 27% 27% 26% 11% 1. Free online course 2. Webinar 3. How-to videos 4. Virtual events 5. Self-paced online courses Opportunity for advancement within your organization they completed and/or renewed in the past 12 months had a significant positive impact on effectiveness in their current roles and opportunities for advancement outside the organization. About a quarter also said that certifications had a significant impact on opportunities for advancement within the organization. This MacGyver-type training may have to increase as companies move whether willingly or not toward digital transformation. If certifications can help IT pros get ahead, why aren t more taking advantage of certification-based training? Thirty-nine percent of respondents named work demands as a deterrent, while 36% have IT Professionals 2017 Salary Guide 4
5 Organizational Focus 2017 When asked for their companies top three organizational priorities, respondents named a couple of relatively recent technologies; cloud computing and business intelligence/proactive analytics. However, the bulk of technologies named are important but traditional: IT security, backup and recovery, network security, disaster recovery and IT architecture. Of course, these technologies will never be obsolete, but it s telling that respondents named them as areas of organizational focus during a time when exploiting next-gen technologies--such as Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and container-based development--is key to meeting customer demand and increasing competitive edge. Training may help companies focus more on next-gen technologies, and next-gen technologies, in turn, may spur companies to provide more support for, and place more value on training. At any rate, for IT professionals to continue to see increases in salary and career growth at their current or future employers they will need to get training in the technologies that will drive the business-- any way they can get it. IT pros, have your salaries grown, shrunk or stayed the same this year? Is training important enough that you will reach into your own pocket to pay for it? Let us know in the comments section below. The survey was conducted by Penton Technology, a part of Informa, in August. Surveys were ed to subscribers of Penton s Channel and/or IT Professional brands. The survey is based on the responses of 272 employed IT professionals. Respondents represent a range of primary businesses/industries, company sizes, job titles and U.S. company locations. Ninety-three percent of respondents reported they are employed full-time. Respondents reported an average employment tenure of six years in their current position, XX years in their organization, and 19 years in the technology industry. Areas of focus for 2017: IT Security 53% Cloud Computing 46% Backup & Recovery 41% Network Security 40% IT Architecture 35% Disaster Recovery 31% Endpoint Security 31% Storage/SAN 25% Patch Management 25% Network Operations 24% Systems Operations 24% Project/Program Management 23% Business Intelligence/Predictive Analytics 23% Business Application Development 22% Help Desk 22% Web/Intranet/Extranet 22% Network Engineering 21% Top technology priorities in 2017: 1.
