3 Main objectives of NEPS stage 8 Adult education and lifelong learning: Which factors influence the participation in formal, non-formal and informal learning activities? Development of competences during adulthood: Literacy in reading, mathematics, natural sciences, ICT, meta-cognition; Which factors affect the competence development in adult life? Returns to (previous) education: What kind of educational degrees will pay off? Effects of educational degrees and previous activities on current situation. -> Multidimensional returns to education (labor market, family, happiness, etc.) 3
