1 The Mended Hearts, Inc. Chapter 200 Executive Committee Meeting Notes Date: February 4, 2017 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by President Leone. In attendance were: Chuck Leone, Bob Kelly, Michael Kolansky, Bob Black, Tom Garrity, Kevin Houlihan, and Howard McAnany REPORTS: PRESIDENT: Chuck Leone John Pope a past chapter 200 President and longtime visitor passed away. He was a 27 year member of our chapter and the second person to have heart surgery at Arlington hospital. A newsletter article documenting John s many years of service is currently in preparation. He will be missed. We discussed whether we should get a larger room for the Support Group meetings, particularly when we have speakers as the current room has attendance limitations. Chuck and Kevin will investigate alternatives. Life After Open Heart Surgery - David Young contacted us about his desire to establish a feedback session for the Cardiac Surgeons at IHVI. The Board was supportive of this activity but would look to David to organize the meetings. We would provide chapter 200 members as appropriate. Michael suggested that we bring this up at the next PFAC meeting. Nominating Committee: Michael Kolansky agreed to run for President and Bob Kelly agreed to run for Treasurer. We discussed subsidizing Heart Guide shipping costs and decided not to do so as we have a very tight budget. But we left open the possibility of making a donation to National. VICE PRESIDENT: Michael Kolansky MENDED LITTLE HEARTS: Robyn Bracebridge AUXILIARY: Howard McAnany The Auxiliary treasurer has resigned and anyone interested should contact Howard. SECRETARY: Michael Kolansky The January 7th meeting minutes were approved. TREASURER: Bob Kelly Cash on hand at the end of January was $ Expenses for January were $64.00 and income for January was $1190. The January financial report is attached and approved. We have received the $2000 ExxonMobil grant. 1

2 VISITING: Kevin Houlihan, Ralph Koontz, Eileen Bradner, George Bogart, Tom Garrity, David Horan Kevin and George Bogart will meet with the Volunteer coordinator at Alexandria Hospital to see the new heart surgery patient spaces and also discuss adding an additional visitor as George s under-study. Thanks to Tom Garrity, the telephone visiting information is ready and visits can begin. No letters have been going out. We discussed various alternatives including post cards and changes to the newsletter. Bob Kelly will investigate sending postcards. Of 300 visit cards for January only 140 had address information. While some clearly said declined there was still a large number just blank. This will come up at the April MH training sessions. PILLOW PROGRAM: Ralph Koontz, Jack Underhill, Tom Garrity David Horan has sent a letter to Looney and Sons Upholstery seeking support for the VA pillow program. Many of the original 25 pillows that we donated to the VA were stolen. So we gave David Horan an additional 20 pillows. But the expectation is that the VA program will provide all future pillows. We received a grant of 3 boxes of pillow fill from Fairfield enough for about 50 pillows. IHVI PATIENT FAMILY ADVISORY COUNCIL (PFAC): Michael Kolansky, Kevin Houlihan AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION: Michael Kolansky Lauren Verrill sent us AHA Go Red materials which were distributed at the Support Group meeting and to the IHVI nursing staff. NEWSLETTER: Jo Scoffield Send all ideas for the March/April newsletter to Jo ASAP. 2

3 PROGRAM CHAIR: Bob Black Margaret Austin,NP, IHVI, Center for Thrombosis Research and Drug Development, will make a Presentation on " Heart Failure" at today s Support Group meeting. Dr. Eric Sarin, Cardiac Surgeon at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute (IHVI) will present "Update on Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement(TAVR) procedure" at the March 4 th Support Group meeting.
