1 Employment Security Commission of North Carolina N e w s R e l e a s e For More Information Contact: For Immediate Release Larry Parker/ Unemployment Rates Decrease Across N.C. in March Rates Decline in 99 Counties Over-The-Month RALEIGH Unemployment rates decreased in 99 of North Carolina s 100 counties in March. The unemployment rate increased in Greene County. Rates declined in 98 counties when compared to the same month last year. Unemployment rates declined in nearly every county in March, said ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes. We are beginning to see more counties drop below a rate of ten percent unemployment. This reflects the commitment by Gov. Perdue and our workforce partners to grow jobs in our state, and this agency remains focused on putting people back to work. North Carolina had 35 counties that were at or below the state s unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. Rates decreased in all 14 of the state s Metropolitan Statistical Areas for the second consecutive month. Counties With Rates 5% Or Below Counties With Rates Between 5% & 10% Counties With Rates 10% Or Above March February (Revised) The number of workers employed (not-seasonally adjusted) increased in March by 51,323 to 4,039,958. The number of people unemployed decreased by 15,633. The number of unemployed people in March was 434,073 workers, compared with 449,706 in February. Orange County had the state s lowest unemployment rate in March, at 6.1 percent. Meanwhile, Graham County had the highest unemployment rate, at 16.4 percent. 5 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY LABOR MARKET CONDITIONS MARCH 2011 North Carolina s statewide unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was 9.7 percent in March. This was a 0.4 of a percentage point decrease from February s revised rate of 10.1 percent, as well as a 1.8 percentage point drop over the year. Over the month, the unemployment rate decreased in 99 counties and increased in only Greene County. Thirty-five counties had unemployment rates at or below the state s 9.7 percent rate. Graham County recorded March s highest unemployment rate at 16.4 percent, 0.9 of a percentage point lower than last month. Swain County had the second-highest rate at 16.3 percent. Orange County had the lowest unemployment rate at 6.1 percent, followed by Chatham, 6.5 percent; Gates, 6.8 percent; and both Durham and Wake, 7.4 percent. Unemployment rates decreased in all of the state s 14 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (Metros) over the previous month. The Rocky Mount Metro had the highest unemployment rate in March at 12.5 percent. The Durham/Chapel Hill Metro had the lowest unemployment rate at 7.1 percent, which decreased 0.3 of a percentage point from the previous month. The Charlotte/Gastonia/Rock Hill NC-SC had the largest net employment increase with 7,800, followed by Raleigh/Cary Metro with 4,700, Greensboro/High Point with 4,600 and Wilmington with 2,400. Both Burlington and Wilmington experienced the greatest percentage increase at 1.8 percent. Over the year, employment rose in seven Metros, decreased in six, and remained unchanged in one. The Raleigh/Cary Metro had the largest net employment increase with 15,000, followed by Charlotte/Gastonia/Rock Hill NC-SC with 4,600, and Durham/Chapel Hill with 2,200. Raleigh/Cary also had the greatest percentage increase at 3.1 percent.
