5 Household Economics in Defining a Household Household Expenses The Household as an Economic Unit: Individuals and family units which, as consumers, buy goods and services from firms and, as resource owners, sell or rent productive resources to business firms. Average annual expenditures and characteristics of all consumer units,. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor) Households do two fundamental things vital to the economy: 1. Demand goods and services 2. Supply labor, capital, land, and entrepreneurial ability Average number of people in consumer unit (household): Persons: 2.5 Earners: 1.3 Vehicles: 1.9 Percent homeowner: 64% before taxes: $65,596 Transportation & Housing Index Housing is considered affordable if it costs less than 30% of a household budget. Transportation is the second largest expense for families, but few consider these costs when choosing a place to live. When transportation costs are added to the housing affordability equation, the number of affordable neighborhoods (in yellow) declines. When combining housing and transportation costs, 45 percent of household income is considered affordable. Source: Center for Neighborhood Technology.
