2 GE DISCRIMINTION Nearly a third of people have suffered age discrimination in some form and one fifth say they have been turned down for a job for which they were otherwise qualified. 31% say they have suffered age discrimination at some point, including 19% who say they have been turned down for a job they were qualified to do which they believe they would have been offered had they been younger year olds (23%) are more likely to say this than year olds (18%) and those aged 65 and over (12%). re is an overwhelming belief that people should have the right to go on working once they ve reached 65 if they are willing and able to do. re is also overwhelming support for companies being able to offer discounts and to sell products and services tailored to specific age groups. 94% of those surveyed believe that people should have the right to continue working after the age of 65 if they are willing and able to do so. 84% say that offering discounts on products to specific age groups is acceptable and 86% say it is acceptable to sell products such as holidays and car insurance that are confined to specific age groups. POST OFFICE More than half of people have visited the Post Office in the last week and nearly a half claim to do so at least once a fortnight. 54% have visited the Post Office in the last week, including 64% of over 65s. Women (59%) are more likely to have done so than men (52%) and people living in Wales (60%) and the South West (59%) are more likely to have done this than those living in London (49%) 49% say they visit the Post Office at least once a fortnight, including 60% of over 65s but only 43% of those living in London. Just under a half will use the Post Office to send presents p to friends and relatives this.
3 45% will take their presents to the Post Office, including 51% of over 65s but only 37% of year olds. 58% of those living in the South West will take their presents to the Post Office but only 39% of those living in shire & Humberside will do the same. Professional people (49% of Bs) are more likely to do so than C2s (34%) or DEs (39%). SHOPPING 86% will use or have used the internet to buy presents, with one in six saying they use or plan to use it a lot. However traditional shopping on foot remains the most popular way to buy presents with nearly three out of five people saying they buy a lot of presents this way year olds (22%) are twice as likely as those over 65 (11%) to say they will or have used the internet a lot to buy presents. People in Wales (22%) are more likely to say this than those people living in any other region. Three quarters of people are planning to spend less than 500 on presents for friends and family rising to nine out of ten of those who have neither children nor grandchildren. s a whole respondents anticipate spending an average of 400 on presents for friends and family. Men ( 414) say they will spend slightly more than women ( 374). Those with children ( 413) and those with grandchildren ( 421) will spend substantially more than those without either ( 262) North East is Britain s most generous region with people there estimating they will spend an average of 437 on presents, people in Scotland are close behind spending and average of 432. People in the South West are Britain s least generous givers on average saying they will spend 373. verage spending on presents declines slightly with age from 420 among year olds to 371 among over 65s. Bs will spend an average of 427, while DEs will spend 298.

This includes 78% of over 65s and 77% of year olds but only 71% of year olds and 70% of year olds.
5 People in the North East and Scotland (31%) are more likely to spend in excess of 500 on presents than those in any other region. Bs (28%) are twice as likely to do this than DEs (14%) Men are twice as likely to spend more on their partners than anyone else e than women are. mong those with grandchildren nearly half will spend more on them than anyone else. 35% of men will spend more on their wives/partners than anyone else compared with 17% of women who say the same about their husbands/partners. HOW PEOPLE SPEND CHRISTMS Three quarters will spend Day with friends and family but one in ten of those without children or grandchildren say they will spend it alone. More than three quarters admit they are likely to end up eating and drinking more than they should. 78% of people say this declining from 82% of year olds to 72% of over 65s. Fewer than half say they are likely to watch the Queen s Day broadcast 43% say this in total including only a third (32%) of year olds but more than a half (56%) of over 65s. Fewer than two in five are likely to attend church. 38% say they are likely to do this. Women (43%) are more likely to do so than men (35%). Only 30% of year olds say they are likely to attend church, a figure that rises to 46% among over 65s. Just over half say they are likely to tip the dustman/postman/milkman
6 56% say they are likely to do this ranging from 50% of year olds to 63% of over 65s. One in five say they are likely to send a round robin newsletter 21% say this, including 26% of those living in the South West and 23% of Bs but only 13% of C2s. GRNDCHILDREN Nearly one half of grandparents think that their grandchildren receive more presents than is good for them. 47% of grandparents say this, including 55% of Scottish grandparents but only 44% of grandparents living in London, the East of England and the West Modlands. Overwhelmingly (84%) parents and grandparents say they will receive thoughtful presents from their children and grandchildren. CHRISTMS PST & PRESENT Half of people think was better when they were younger and nearly half think that was better for children in the past than it is today, while two thirds say that the true meaning of appears to have lost these days. 49% say they enjoyed more in the past. This ranges from 53% of year olds to 47% of over 65s, from 58% of people who have neither children nor grandchildren to 45% of grandparents, and from 55% of those living in Wales to 46% of those in the North East. 43% disagree that is better for children these days, though only 37% of over 65s and 38% of DEs say this. 67% agree that the true meaning of appears to have been lost these days, including 71% of those with no children or grandchildren.
