1 The Golden Birth Game is sponsored by: and CertTEYL E-Learning Course For those who teach English to children.

2 Start Where you re from determines your life. Flip a coin! HEADS = 1 space forward. TAILS = 2 spaces forward. OR use a for a quicker game. Finish 1 st 2 nd 3 rd

3 Preparation work Where you re from determines your life. Instructions Project Approach - The preparation work for this can be done over several lesson plans as a project. This will motivate and engage the students to play the game. While assembling the game the students will understand how it works and at the same time they will learn more about life in other countries. There are worksheet sets that provide more background for this game. The sets are called Education in the Developing World. Please go to to find these FREE worksheets. NOTE: Cutting out all of the cards and gluing the pieces to the back may take about 120 minutes for a few children to complete. This work should be spread out over several lesson plans or your students will get tired of cutting. You may want to help younger children to cut the cards out. EXTRA ITEMS REQUIRED Scissors, glue sticks, dice or coins, playing pieces/markers (any small item will do) How to play [2-6 players] 1. All players put their playing pieces on the Start square. Give a KEY CARD to each player. 3. A player should act as banker and handle all of the money transactions. The banker gives the following bills to each player: ONE, THREE, TWO 0, TWO, FOUR, FIVE, FIVE $1 4. Place the country cards face down. Each player chooses a country card randomly. 5. Determine who will be the first player to start and that player will flip a coin. If the coin lands on heads, then the player moves ONE space forward. If the coin lands on tails, then the player moves TWO spaces forward. You can use regular dice for a quicker game! (One should be enough.) 6. The player then takes a card from the corresponding pile,,, or and follows the instructions on the card the player will receive money or pay money to the bank. The card goes back to the bottom of the pile. 7. Make sure that the player reads the correct pay or receive amount according to their country card. The KEY CARD will show what the symbols on the playing cards represent. The players can find the development status of their country by looking it up on the REFERENCE CHART. 8. The next player flips the coin, moves the spaces required, picks up a card, follows the instructions, etc. 9. Each player continues to play until they reach the Finish square. The first three players to finish get the money listed in the Finish square. When all players finish, count each player s money and the player with the most money wins!! Is this fair?
