A DIGITAL BINOMIAL THEOREM FOR SHEFFER SEQUENCES TOUFIK MANSOUR AND HIEU D. NGUYEN arxv: v1 [math.nt] 29 Oct 2015 Abstract. We extend the dgtal bnomal theorem to Sheffer polynomal sequences by demonstratng that ther correspondng Serpńs matrces satsfy a multplcaton property that s equvalent to the convoluton dentty for Sheffer sequences. 1. Introducton The bnomal theorem s a fundamental result n mathematcs: (x+y n x y n. (1 0 One generalzaton of the bnomal theorem, due to Callan [2] (see also [6], expresses the exponents appearng n (1 n terms of the bnary sum-of-dgts functon s(m: (x+y s(n x s(m y s(n m, (2 (m,n m carry-free where a par of non-negatve ntegers (j, s sad to be carry-free f ther sum n bnary nvolves no carres. We refer to (2 as the dgtal bnomal theorem. Several extensons of the dgtal bnomal theorem have recently been found. For example, a non-bnary verson s gven n [7] for any nteger base b > 2: ( x+y +n 1 n ( ( x+m 1 m ( y +n m 1. (3 n m Here, n m denote the -th dgt n the base-b expanson of n m, respectvely. Also, m b n denotes the fact that m n for all. Another example s a q-analog gven n [4]: ( x+q y +n 1 n (m,n m carry-free q zn(m x s(m y s(n m. (4 In ths paper, we present a dgtal bnomal theorem for Sheffer sequences those of bnomal type by consderng a polynomal generalzaton of (1. Let f(t be a delta seres Date: Mathematcs Subject Classfcaton. Prmary 11B65; Secondary 28A80. Key words phrases. bnomal theorem, Serpńs matrx, sum-of-dgts, Sheffer polynomal sequence. 1
g(t be an nvertble seres,.e., f(t a t (a 0 0,a 1 0, g(t 0 b t (b The polynomal sequence s n (x, n 0,1,..., s sad to be Sheffer for (g(t,f(t f t has generatng functon ([8, Theorem 2.3.4, p. 18] 1 ex f(t s n (x t n (5 g( f(t n! where f(t s the compostonal nverse of f(t. The Sheffer sequence s n (x s nown to satsfy the convoluton dentty ([8, Theorem 2.3.9, p. 21] s n (x+y p (xs n (y. (6 0 Here, p n (xsthepolynomalsequence assocatedtos n (x,.e., p n (xhasgeneratngfuncton e x f(t p n (x t n. n! n0 It s nown that p n (x s of bnomal type,.e., p n (x satsfes the bnomal dentty (([8, Theorem 2.4.7, p. 26] p n (x+y p (xp n (y. (7 0 In the specal case where f(t t n (5 so that p n (x x n, the Sheffer sequence s n (x s then called an Appell sequence. There are many well-nown examples of Sheffer sequences, e.g., the Bernoull, Hermte (probablstc verson, Laguerre polynomals defned by the generatng functons n0 t e t 1 exp(xt exp(xt t 2 /2 n0 n0 ( 1 exp xt (1 t α+1 1 t B n (x t n, n! H n (x t n, n! n0 L α n(x t n, n! respectvely. Observe that B n (x H n (x are both Appell sequences. It s well nown that all three Sheffer sequences satsfy the convoluton denttes B n (x+y x B n (y, 0 2
H n (x+y L α n(x+y 0 0 x H n (y, L 1 (xlα n (y, respectvely. These polynomals also have extensons that are also Sheffer sequences, e.g., Bernoull polynomals of hgher order [5] generalzed Hermte polynomals [10]. If we renormalze a Sheffer sequence s n (x ts assocated sequence p n (x by defnng s n (x s n (x/n! p n (x p n (x/n!, then (6 (7 are equvalent to s n (x+y p (x s n (y (8 p n (x+y 0 p (x p n (y, (9 respectvely. Identtes (8 (9 form the bass for our man result. 0 Theorem 1. Let n be a non-negatve nteger wth base b expanson n n b + +n 0 b 0 {s n (x} be a Sheffer polynomal sequence wth assocated sequence {p n (x}. Then s n (x +y ( p m (x s n m (y (10 p n (x +y where m m b + +m 0 b 0. ( p m (x p n m (y, (11 In the case where x 0... x y 0... y, we obtan as a corollary the followng result: Corollary 2. For n b N 1, we have s b 1 (x+y N p b 1 (x+y N ( ( p m (x p m (x s b 1 m (y p b 1 m (y (12 (13 If we specalze to Bernoull polynomals by settng s n (x B n (x p n (x x n, then (12 gves the followng result. 3
Theorem 3. For n b N 1, we have B b 1 (x+y N where s b (m s the base-b sum-of-dgts functon. ( x s b(m B b 1 m (y Smlar formulas can be obtaned for other specal polynomals such as Hermte Laguerre polynomals. Also, we remar that settng y 0 n (14 yelds a formula for hgher powers of Bernoull polynomals n terms of Bernoull numbers B n : B n (0 the sumof-dgts functon: B b 1 (x N ( x s b(m B b 1 m The proof of Theorem 1 wll be gven n the next secton where we nvestgate a Sheffer sequence analog of the Serpńs matrx use ts multplcatve property to derve (10 ( Serpns Matrces of Sheffer Type Throughout ths paper we assume that b s an nteger greater than 1. We begn by ntroducng the noton of dgtal domnance as defned n [1] (see also [7]. Defnton 4. Let m n be non-negatve ntegers wth base b expansons m m b + +m 0 b 0 n n b + +n 0 b 0, respectvely. We denote m b n to mean that m s dgtally less than n n base b,.e., m n for all 0,...,N 1. Next, we defne a sequence of generalzed Serpńs matrces correspondng to the Sheffer sequence s n (x ts assocated sequence p n (x. Defnton 5. Let N be a non-negatve nteger. Denote x N (x 0,...,x. If N 0, we set S b,0 (x 0 P b,0 (x 0 1. For N > 0, we defne the N-varable Serpńs matrces S b,n (x N (α N (j,,x N matrces P b,n (x N (β N (j,,x N of dmenson b N b N by s f 0 j b d (x N 1 α N (j,,x N b j; 0, otherwse, β N (j,,x N p d (x. f 0 j b N 1 b j; 0, otherwse, respectvely, where j d 0 b 0 +d 1 b d b s the base-b expanson of j. The followng lemma gves a recurrence for S b,n (x N P b,n (x N. 4 (14 (15 (16
Lemma 6. The generalzed Serpńs matrces S b,n (x N P b,n (x N satsfy the recurrence S b,1 (x S b,n+1 (x N+1 S b,1 (x N S b,n (x N, (17 P b,n+1 (x N+1 P b,1 (x N P b,n (x N, (18 respectvely, where we defne s 1 (x s 2 (x s 1 (x s b 1 (x s b 2 (x s b 3 (x 1 { sj (x, f 0 j b 1; 0, otherwse P b,1 (x p 1 (x p 2 (x p 1 (x p b 1 (x p b 2 (x p b 3 (x 1 { pj (x, f 0 j b 1; 0, otherwse. Proof. Followng [4], we shall prove (17 by nducton on N. It s clear that (17 holds for N 0. Next, assume that (17 holds for N 1. To prove that(17 holds for N, we express S N+1 (x N+1 a b b matrx of blocs (A p,q 0 p,q b 1 : A 0,0... A 0,b 1 S N+1 (x N , A b 1,0... A b 1,b 1 where each A p,q s a square matrx of sze b N. We consder two cases dependng on the poston of A p,q : Case 1. p < q. Then by defnton of S b,n+1 (x N+1 we have that α N+1 (p,q,x N+1 0, whch mples A p,q 0. Case2. p q. Letα N+1 (j,,x N+1 beanarbtraryentryofa p,q. Thenpb N j (p+1b N 1 qb N (q+1b N 1. Set j j pb N qb N. If j <, then by defnton α N+1 (j,,x N 0. Therefore, we assume j. Let j d 0 b 0 + d 1 b d N b N, where d N p q. Then j d 0 b 0 +d 1 b 1 + +d b. Snce b j f only f b j,we have N s d (x f 0 j b N+1 1 b j; α N+1 (j,,x N+1 0 otherwse. It follows that s dn (x N α b,n (j,,x N. A p,q s p q (x N S b,n (x N,r N 5
hence S b,n+1 (x N+1 S b,1 (x N,r N S b,n (x N,r N. Ths proves (17. The proof for (18 s analogous wll be omtted. The generalzed Serpńs matrces S b,n (x N P b,n (x N satsfy the followng multplcatve property: Theorem 7. Let N be a non-negatve nteger. Then where we defne P b,n (x N S b,n (y N S b,n (x N +y N (19 P b,n (x N P b,n (y N P b,n (x N +y N, (20 x N +y N (x 0 +y 0,x 1 +y 1,...,x +y. Proof. We shall prove (19 usng nducton. To prove that (19 holds for the base case N 1, let γ(j, denote the (j,-entry of T P b,1 (x 1 S b,1 (y 1. Snce T s lower-trangular, t follows that γ(j, 0 f j <. Therefore, we assume j. By defnton of S b,1 (x 1 P b,1 (y 1, we have γ(j, j p j (x 0 s (y 0 j Snce s n (x s a Sheffer sequence, t follows from (6 that γ(j, s j (x 0 +y 0, p (x 0 s j (y 0. or equvalently, P b,1 (x 1,r 1 S b,1 (y 1,r 1 S b,1 (x 1 +y 1,r 1. Ths proves (19 for N 1. Next, assume that (19 holds for arbtrary N. To prove that (19 holds for N + 1, we employ Lemma 6 the mxed-property of a Kronecer product: P b,n+1 (x N+1 S b,n+1 (y N+1 (P b,1 (x N P b,n (x N (S b,1 (y N S b,n (y N (P b,1 (x N S b,1 (y N (P b,n (x N S b,n (y N. Moreover, by the nducton hypothess Lemma 6 agan, we obtan P b,n+1 (x N+1 S b,n+1 (y N+1 S b,1 (x N +y N S b,n (x N +y N S b,n+1 (x N+1 +y N+1. Hence, (19 holds for N +1. The proof of (20 s smlar wll be omtted. Proof of Theorem 1. We equate the matrx entres at poston (n,0 on both sdes of (19 to obtan α N (n,0,x N +y N β N (n,m,x N α N (m,0,y N β N (n,n m,x N α N (n m,0,y N. Ths yelds (10 as desred. The dervaton of (11 s smlar left for the reader to verfy. 6
We conclude wth two deas on how to extend Theorem 1. The frst s to terate (10 (11 to obtan a trnomal verson: smlarly, s n (x +y +z p n (x +y +z ( 0 l b m 0 l b m p m (x +y ( ( p l (x p l (x s n m (z p m l (y p m l (y s n m (z p n m (z where l l b + +l 0 b 0. Of course, we can also terate repeatedly to obtan to the multnomal formulas s n (x (1 + +x (d 0 m (d 1 b n... 0 m (1 b m (2 p n (x (1 + +x (d 0 m (d 1 b n... 0 m (1 b m (2 ( ( p (1 m (x (1 p (1 m (x (1 0 p m (d 1 p m (d 1 (x (d 1 m (d 2 (x (d 1 m (d 2 s n (x (d m (d 1 p n (x (d m (d 1 where m (j m (j b + +m (j 0 b 0. The second dea s to vew the bnomal convoluton dentty for Sheffer sequences n the context of umbral calculus lnear functonals on the vector space of polynomals. Defne the product of two such lnear functonals L M by LM x n L x M x n. (21 Then Roman Rota [9, Prop. 3.3, p. 102] proved that for any polynomal sequence p n (x of bnomal type, we have LM p n (x L p (x M p n (x. (22 0 7
The dgtal verson of(22 ts multnomal generalzaton then becomes clear extends [9, Prop. 3.4, p. 103]; (see also [3, Eq. (17, p. 874]: ( LM p n (x L p m (x M p n m (x L 1 L d p n (x 0 m (d 1 b n... 0 m (1 b m (2 ( m0 L 1 p (1 m (x References L d p m (d 1 (x m (d 2 L d p n m (d 1 [1] T. Ball, T. Edgar, D.
